Aggressive Second Half Leads UCSD To Season Opening Win
Release: Saturday 09/01/2012

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's soccer team opened its 2012 season with a dominating display, earning a 6-1 victory over Central Washington on Friday at Triton Soccer Field.

Aggressive offense was the key to the match for UCSD (1-0-0) as it consistently put pressure on Central Washington's (0-1-1) defensive line.

CWU held UCSD off until Hayley Johnson converted a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead 29 minutes into the game.

The Wildcats made a solid attempt at a quick return, but freshman goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky came up with her first collegiate save to keep the lead. However, at 38:50 Kelsy Villegas collected a pass from Sydney Coleman and lofted a high shot from 12 yards out that found the back of the net just under the crossbar to even the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.

UCSD broke out in the second half and exploded for five goals, three of which came within five minutes of each other. The Tritons' barrage included four attacks on net in the first ten minutes of play.

Sophomore Cassie Callahan scored back-to-back goals to put UCSD up 3-1. The first, a header off a free kick from Johnson, came at the 60:14 mark. Just over a minute later, Callahan took a cross from senior midfielder Alexa Enlow in the goal mouth and buried it for her fifth career score.

Seniors Gabi Hernandez and Ellen Wilson each scored on low shots into the right side of the net at 64:15 and 71:39, respectively. Rachel Leslie knocked in the final goal of the game, the first of her career, with five minutes remaining.

UC San Diego continues play on Triton Soccer Field Friday, Sept. 7 when it hosts its CCAA season opener against San Francisco State at 7 p.m. The action continues Sunday when Cal Poly Pomona comes to visit. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
