Release: Tuesday 09/11/2012

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's basketball program is pleased to welcome Gerred Link to the team as an assistant coach. The announcement was made Tuesday by head coach Chris Carlson.

Link comes to La Jolla after serving as an assistant coach with fellow California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member Sonoma State since 2010. He also played guard for the Seawolves from 2007-09.

"I am extremely excited to have Gerred join our basketball program here at UCSD," said Carlson. "He has a fantastic background having played and worked for programs that I have great respect for. He is familiar with our league and its challenges, and I believe he will be a great asset to our student-athletes, our department and our university. His commitment to the growth of others and his ability to communicate his knowledge of the game will benefit our program immensely."

Link's coaching career began at Sonoma State as a student assistant in 2010. He rapidly progressed to a full-time assistant that same year and was responsible for providing tactical and technical skills instruction to the guards. In addition, Link was involved in recruiting, compliance, scouting, film management, strength and conditioning, fundraising and budgeting.

While in Rohnert Park, Link was also the co-director of Sonoma State's basketball camps.

Link's playing resumé includes both domestic and international competition.

He captained the 2008-09 Sonoma State squad and was named the team's Most Valuable Player that season. He was the tabbed the Seawolves' Most Inspirational Player following the 2007-08 campaign.

From 2004-06, Link competed at Grossmont College in El Cajon, where he was an All-Pacific Coast Conference selection in both basketball and tennis. He was a member of the baseball team at Los Angeles Pierce College in 2004.

Link traveled overseas to play for the Aix-Marseille Area Select Team in Aix-en-Provence, France, from August 2009 through January of 2010.

The Los Angeles native earned a Bachelor's Degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science from Sonoma State in 2011. He is currently pursuing a Master's in kinesiology with a concentration in biomechanics and exercise physiology.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to continue my coaching career at UCSD," said Link. "The UCSD name speaks for itself and is synonymous with success. I am looking forward to learning from Coach Carlson and Coach (Eric) Olen. They have done a great job here and hopefully I can bring good energy, hard work and determination to help continue the Tritons' tradition of success."

UCSD recently released its 2012-13 season schedule, which kicks off with a crosstown exhibition game at San Diego State on Monday, Nov. 5 at 7:05 p.m. To see the entire schedule, click here.
