Haroush's Goal Lifts UCSD Over Cal Poly Pomona
Release: Sunday 09/09/2012

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's soccer team registered a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play Sunday afternoon at Triton Soccer Field.

Junior forward Tsuk Haroush scored his first goal of the season to help the Tritons keep their CCAA record unblemished.

UCSD upped its season marks to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA, while CPP fell to 2-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the league.

UCSD, which outshot CPP 13-8, got its first attempt on goal in the 11th minute from Padraig Buckley, a rocket that careened off the left post. The second occured when classmate Sam Ball caught Cal Poly Pomona keeper Kris Minton out of position, but his shot missed left.

The Broncos' first big look came near the 40 minute mark when Michael Torres ripped a shot directly into Triton goalie Josh Cohen's hands.

The first half remained relatively even between the two squads. They ended the first 45 minutes scoreless, and matched with three shots apiece. Andisheh Bagheri led both rosters with two shots on goal.

A Triton free kick began UCSD's first offensive sequence of the second half. Buckley's service to the inside remained the closest push for either team until the 56th minute when Cal Poly Pomona earned virtually the same opportunity but could not connect.

UC San Diego kept possesion of the ball long enough to get set up and push the ball in front of the goal twice before earning a corner. Adam Zernik took the kick, placing it inside the box where Haroush's header found the back of the net from five yards out.

CPP's front line had several outstanding scoring opportunities the rest of the way, but couldn't find a way to get on the scoreboard.

UCSD hits the road next week for a pair of CCAA matches, playing at Cal State L.A. on Friday, Sept. 14 (4:30 p.m.) and at Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday, Sept. 16 (11:30 a.m.).
