UCSD family and friends are coming together this season to remember former Triton volleyball player Karen Reis, who was tragically killed in Coronado in January of 2012. A recognition was held prior to the Cal State L.A. match on September 15. The Reis family was presented with a "No. 1" jersey and a moment of silence was held. In rememberance of Karen, a 2010 graduate, the Tritons will wear a special insignia on their uniform jerseys all season. In addition, you may notice the "Reis Ripple" graphics on the pole pads at RIMAC Arena. These signify the positive impact that Karen had on everyone she met and how that impact trickled down from one person to another.
REGARDING THE BRONCOS
Cal Poly Pomona comes into Thursday's match with a 6-4 overall record and sits in fourth place in the CCAA with a 2-1 mark. The Broncos had three league matches on the road last week, sweeping Humboldt State and Cal State Stanislaus and losing a grueling five-setter against Chico State. At home, they are yet to be defeated with victories over Azusa Pacific, Point Loma Nazarene and Cal State San Marcos. Winners of six of its last seven, CPP is off to its best start since the 2008 season. Diana Lake leads the team in kills (3.61/set) and is second in digs (3.33/set). Nicoletta Stork and Katie Colin split setting duties, averaging 4.58 and 4.56 assists/set, respectively. Kelly Bonja averages a team-best 4.33 digs/set. The Broncos are out-blocking opponents 2.26 to 1.46/set and are led by Taylr Kreutziger (.97/set) and Lauren Jones (.94/set).
REGARDING THE LUMBERJACKS
Humboldt State entered the week with a 2-8 overall record and is in last place in the league with an 0-3 mark. The Jacks, which host Cal State San Bernardino Thursday, dropped three conference tilts last week, falling to Cal Poly Pomona (0-3), Cal State Stanislaus (0-3) and Chico State (1-3). They have played six of their last seven matches away from home. Alexa Rosendale is averaging a team-best 2.97 kills/set and is second in digs (3.21/set). Tiffany McCray leads defensively, averaging 4.25 digs/set and setter Sarah Wilber is averaging 7.64 assists/set. HSU is leading opponents in service aces (2.12 to 1.80/set) and blocks (1.70 to 1.51/set).
Among all CCAA players, Sara McCutchan is third in blocks (1.00/set) and fourth in hitting percentage (.341). Danielle Dahle is fifth in points (4.1/set) and sixth in kills (3.46). Amber Hawthorne is eighth in assists (8.67/set) and Lauren Demos is ninth in hitting (.281).
Junior Brittany Lombardi lit a fire that helped propel UCSD to its 3-1 win over Cal State L.A. last week. Normally a libero/defensive specialist, Lombardi tried her hand at hitting and finished the match with a career-best six kills on 20 attacks. She also totaled a team-best 13 digs.
