DO WE HAVE ROOM?
Between sets two and three of Saturday night's match against Cal State Stanislaus, RIMAC Arena will be adorned with some new wall art, assuming there's still some open space. NCAA runner-up banners will be unveiled for the softball and men's swimming and diving teams as they both placed second in the nation in 2012. Throughout school history, a total of 42 Triton squads have finished as the national runner-up.
UCSD family and friends are coming together this season to remember former Triton volleyball player Karen Reis, who was tragically killed in Coronado in January of 2012. A recognition was held prior to the Cal State L.A. match on September 15. The Reis family was presented with a "No. 1" jersey and a moment of silence was held. In rememberance of Karen, a 2010 graduate, the Tritons will wear a special insignia on their uniform jerseys all season. In addition, you may notice the "Reis Ripple" graphics on the pole pads at RIMAC Arena. These signify the positive impact that Karen had on everyone she met and how that impact trickled down from one person to another.
REGARDING THE WILDCATS
Chico State, ranked 18th nationally and in first place in the CCAA, enters Friday's match with a 10-1 overall record and is the lone team in the league with an undefeated mark at 4-0. The Wildcats' current four-match win streak includes victories over Cal Poly Pomona, Humboldt State, Sonoma State and San Francisco State. Their lone loss came against Western Washington at the Sonoma Spike tourney. Alex Shurtz, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, leads the team with 4.50 kills/set, 17 blocks and 4.87 points/set. Jessica Simms averages a team-best 3.90 digs/set and setter Sable Villaescusa is averaging 10.54 assists/set.
REGARDING THE WARRIORS
Stanislaus entered the week at 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the CCAA and is sitting in ninth place in the league. The Warriors have dropped their last three matches, all in straight sets, falling to Cal Poly Pomona, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Andrea Fett leads the team in kills, averaging 3.50/set. Ashley Pittman and Jaclyn Pinasco are collecting 3.07 and 2.89 digs/set, respectively, and Melissa Bishop has 35 blocks, a team-high. Setter Kendal Munoz is averaging 8.75 assists per set.
Among all CCAA players, Danielle Dahle is third in total kills (155) and total points (181.5) and fifth in kills/set (3.52) and points/set (4.1). Sara McCutchan ranks third in total blocks (43), fourth in blocks/set (.98) and fifth in attack percentage (.325). Amber Hawthorne is sixth in total assists (378) and assists/set (8.79).
In overall team stats, UCSD is second in attack percentage (.222), third in kills/set (13.32), fourth in total kills (586), fifth in total digs (683), digs/set (15.52) and total blocks (86).
UCSD posted a season-high 11 service aces at Humboldt State last week. Freshman Katy Woodward was responsible for five of those, including three straight early in the third set. The last time the Tritons had 11 or more aces in a single match was against Alaska Anchorage on Sept. 3, 2010, when they totaled 13.
UCSD's next victory will be the 50th for head coach Ricci Luyties. To date, he owns a 49-19 (.721) record since taking over the team prior to the 2010 season.
SPEAKING OF VICTORIES
The Tritons' win at Humboldt State on Sept. 22 was the team's 200th CCAA victory. Since joining the league in 2000, UCSD has amassed a stellar 200-51 (.797) record.
