No. 5 UCSD Settles For Draw With Cal State Dominguez Hills
Release: Sunday 09/28/2012
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The ball didn't quiet bounce in the direction of the fifth-ranked UC San Diego women's soccer team in a 1-1 draw against league opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday afternoon at Triton Soccer Field.

The tie against the Toros marked the first blemish on UCSD's record, bringing the squad to a 7-0-1 record overall and 6-0-1 in conference.

"We are very fortunate to come away with the tie," said head coach Brian McManus. "We weren't working hard enough. We would not win the tackles and we just didn't believe in ourselves when we got the ball."

After a slow start, the Tritons picked up the tempo and were able to get a few attempts on goal. UCSD struck first, but not until 15 minutes into the second half. Laura Gordon struck a hard shot that looked to be heading in for the first goal of the game, but it bounced off the crossbar. Gabi Hernandez placed herself in the right position to reach the deflection and put the ball in the net to give the Tritons the lead.

Cal State Dominguez Hills answered back at the 68:29 mark with an entry pass from 15 yards out by Claudia Toledo to Olivia Patterson, who scored to knot the game at 1-1.

UCSD battled to regain the lead and outshot the Toros 8-4 in the second half. The Tritons couldn't get anything past Toro keeper Tiffany Hollis, who finished with seven saves. UC San Diego's Kelcie Brodsky also completed the afternoon with seven saves.

The game went into an aggressive pair of extra periods, with CSUDH's Katelyn Fregosi earning a yellow card just a second before the completion of the first overtime. The Toros ended up outshooting the Tritons 7-3 in the two overtimes, but neither team connected with the back of the net, settling with the draw.

UC San Diego returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 30 at noon as they host Cal State San Bernardino at Triton Soccer Field.
