LA JOLLA, Calif. - A .349 attack and strong blocking led the UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent Cal State East Bay Saturday night at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 22-25, 25-17, 25-13 and 25-15.
UCSD closes the first half of the CCAA season with a 13-6 overall record and an 8-3 mark in the league, tied with San Francisco State for second place. CSUEB, which defeated first place Cal State San Bernardino Friday night, dropped to 7-11 overall and 2-9 in the CCAA.
A pair of Tritons recorded double-doubles as Sophie Rowe had a match-high 16 kills with 13 digs and Danielle Dahle had 14 kills and a match-best 15 digs. Both outside hitters were potent all night as Rowe attacked at .389 (16-2-36) and Dahle finished at .379 (14-3-29).
Middle blocker Sara McCutchan totaled six blocks as the Tritons held a 10.5 to 6.0 advantage in that category. She also had 10 kills and hit .304 (10-3-23).

For the Pioneers, Suzy Ni Xu had a team-high 11 kills and Hannah Bell followed with 10, finishing just short of a double-double with nine digs. Setter Danielle Stewart managed a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs.
UCSD held East Bay to a .176 (45-21-136) attack. The Tritons held a sizable lead on the defensive end as well, tallying 61 digs to CSUEB's 45.
After hitting .282 in the first set, UCSD improved in each of the three remaining frames, hitting .300 in set two, .323 in set three and a whopping .538 in the final stanza. In the fourth set, the Tritons collected 15 kills and made just a single error in 26 attacks.
Down 21-18 in the opener, East Bay scored five straight points and seven of the final eight to win.
The Pioneers opened the second set where they left off, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. UCSD would not take the lead until a four-point run gave it a 16-13 advantage and the Tritons would not trail again.
UCSD led wire-to-wire in set three. A six-point run, which featured two kills each for Cooper and Dahle, led to a 12-4 lead.
The final set proved to be the most competitive as it had nine tie scores and four lead changes. However, all of the competition came in the first half. At 15-15, UCSD really poured it on, scoring 10 consecutive points without giving any up to take the set and the match. Rachel Gam had three kills and a solo block during the sequence.
UC San Diego will start the second half of the CCAA season on the road, playing at Cal State L.A. on Friday, Oct. 19 and at Cal State Dominguez Hill on Saturday, Oct. 20. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. first serves. The Tritons were swept by CSUDH at home on Sept. 14 and came back the next night to defeat CSULA in four sets.
