SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - With little time to rest from its lengthy Saturday, the UC San Diego men's tennis team closed out the 2012 UCSB Classic on Sunday with a pair of confident wins.

I'm pretty happy with the way our guys competed,” said head coach Timmer Willing. “They played some very high-level matches and many of them are extremely tired.”

Kona Luu and Ganesh Alagappan opened the day with their Flight "B" Doubles Consolation Final against Nevada's Ryan Andrada and Philip Hinojosa. In the grueling match, Luu and Alagappan outlasted the Wolfpack, 8-6, to earn the Tritons a fifth-place finish in the bracket.

Alagappan, who injured his ankle during his Saturday match against Cal Poly's Gannon Daynes, followed his doubles triumph with the third-place match of the Flight "C" singles bracket. Alagappan battled back from a 6-4 first-set loss to even his match against Santa Barbara City College's Logan Liddell with a 6-2 win in the second set.

Though the redshirt freshman endured the pain and pushed the third set past six games, Liddell ended Alagappan's inspirational performance with a 7-6 score in the third frame and forced the Triton to settle for fourth.

"I'm pretty happy with Ganesh competing the way he did," Willing said. "I knew he was tired. His ankle's been a little bit of an issue for him, and he still wanted to continue and compete and still try to pull out a win and almost pulled it off. He got up, 4-1, in that third set but just couldn't quite do it physically, but he stayed in there, gave himself a chance to win and that's all we could ask."

Elsewhere in singles action, Max Jiganti extended his stretch of wins in the Flight "B" Consolation Final by defeating Brett Bacharach of UC Davis and claiming ninth place in the bracket. Though Jiganti and Bacharach each reached the finals after defeating their respective opponents in the semifinals, 6-2, in straight sets, Jiganti won the first set, 6-2, before holding off Bacharach in the second set, 6-4.

Camill Salomon was scheduled to play UCD's Kyle Miller for 11th-place in the Flight "A" Consolation Final. However, Salomon went uncontested and earned a default win to end the competition in 11th overall.

The Tritons will return to competition at the 56th Annual SoCal Intercollegiate Championships in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Hosted by UCLA, the draws of the five-day long tournament will be posted on Friday, Nov. 2.
