Dig For A Cure
Saturday's contest at Cal State Dominguez Hills is a designated "Dig For A Cure" match. Throughout the month of October, each CCAA volleyball program will host a "Dig For A Cure" match to promote breast cancer awareness month. The teams will wear pink warm-up shirts and pink volleyballs will be used to honor those affected by breast cancer. UCSD's home match against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, Oct. 27 will also be a "Dig For A Cure" match.
Back On the List
UCSD is back among the nation's top-25 teams, coming in at No. 25 in this week's AVCA poll. The Tritons started the season at No. 17, then fell to No. 25 before dropping out of the poll and receiving votes for five straight weeks.
Regarding the Golden Eagles
Cal State L.A. enters Friday's match with a 9-9 overall record and a 7-4 mark in the CCAA, tied for fourth with three other teams in the league. The Golden Eagles have been on a tear, winning their past four matches over Cal Poly Pomona, Humboldt State, Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State, all on the road. Marquis Mora, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, leads the conference in hitting percentage, aces and blocks and leads the team in kills and points.
Regarding the Toros
Cal State Dominguez Hills brings a 9-9 overall record into the week. The Toros are tied for fourth in the CCAA at 7-4 and have won their last two matches, on the road at Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus. They host league-leading Cal State San Bernardino Friday night. Elizabeth Krieger leads the squad in kills and aces and is second in digs. Whitney Lee is tops in blocks and points, while Korryne Kelley is the digs leader.
UCSD family and friends are coming together this season to remember former Triton volleyball player Karen Reis, who was tragically killed in Coronado in January of 2012. A recognition was held prior to the Cal State L.A. match on Sept. 15, at which the Reis family was presented with a "No. 1" jersey and a moment of silence was observed. The Tritons will wear a special insignia on their uniform jerseys all season. In addition, you may notice the "Reis Ripple" graphics on the pole pads at RIMAC Arena. These signify the positive impact that Karen had on everyone she met and how that impact trickled down from one person to another.
UC San Diego Athletics, in conjunction with the San Diego Food Bank, is taking part in the 2012 Colleges Rock Hunger Campaign for the remainder of the month of October. The initiative provides nourishment for San Diego families in need. Anyone who brings a non-perishable food item to a UCSD intercollegiate sporting event will be admitted free of charge. Help a great cause and enjoy some exciting collegiate athletics at the same time!
