The UC San Diego men's and women's swimming and diving teams open the 2012-13 season by hosting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a dual meet at Canyonview Pool this Saturday, Oct. 27. The first of 16 events is slated to begin at 2 p.m.

"This has traditionally been a very good meet for us," said men's head coach Matt Macedo, as he and women's counterpart Corrie Falcon prepare to enter their second seasons at the helm. "We always have this meet (against CMS) at home, and we know what to expect with them. It's a great point for us to see where we are as far as the first official meet of the new season. Coming off of our Blue vs. Gold meet, we know we need to tighten up some things technically.

"For the big picture, this meet will give us an idea of where we stand going into an important November for us."

The Triton men hope to knock another rung off the ascension ladder this season following back-to-back, program-best runner-up placements at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships. UCSD finished 255 points behind the now-eight-time defending national champion Drury University Panthers of Springfield, Mo., in 2011, but chopped that gap down to 73 points a year ago in Mansfield, Texas.

On the women's side, UCSD placed third at the NCAA Championships back in March for the 10th time in its 12 seasons at the Division II level.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). Known as the Stags on the men's side and the Athenas on the women's, the program finished ninth and 27th in the women's and men's competitions, respectively, at the 2012 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships. The CMS head coach is Charlie Griffiths.

These two programs have met at the start of each of the past four seasons, with the Tritons unbeaten during that stretch against both the Stags and the Athenas.

This Saturday, the No. 10 UCSD men's water polo team hosts Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m., ahead of swimming at 2 p.m. There will be a red bin present to accept canned and other non-perishable food items in conjunction with UCSD's participation in the Colleges Rock Hunger campaign through the month of October. A minimum of one canned or non-perishable food item will gain Triton fans free admittance into the men's water polo and women's volleyball matches both Friday and Saturday this week. Entry into all UCSD swimming and diving meets is free of charge.

Saturday's dual meet with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will feature a standard collegiate 16-event format, with two breaks after the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. The one-meter and three-meter springboard diving events will be held concurrently to the swimming in the adjacent pool at the Canyonview complex. The swimming program will be as follows: 200 medley relay, 1000 free, 200 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 200 fly, 50 free, 100 free, 200 back, 200 breast, 500 free, 100 fly, 200 IM and 400 free relay.

Individual events during this Saturday's dual meet will be scored to five places (1st-9; 2nd-4; 3rd-3; 4th-2; 5th-1). Relays will be scored to three places (1st-11; 2nd-4; 3rd-2). No more than three individuals or two relay foursomes per team can accumulate points in a given event. Swimmers can not take part in more than four races total (maximum of three individual races) on the day.

The Tritons held their annual Blue vs. Gold meet last Saturday, Oct. 20, with 13 meet records set. Former national champions Emily Adamczyk and Nicholas Korth shared the meet high of three individual victories apiece. The Blue, led by Adamczyk and captains Julius Espiritu and Anji Shakya, topped Korth and fellow junior captain Bethany Dong's Gold squad, 307-253.

After Saturday's season opener, the UCSD men's and women's swimming and diving teams will next head north to face the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara at Campus Pool on Friday, Nov. 2, beginning at 12 p.m.
