Where It's At
RIMAC Arena is the place to be for top notch volleyball this week as it will play host to the top four teams in the CCAA. Cal State San Bernardino is in first place at 15-2, UC San Diego sits in second place at 13-4 and San Francisco State and Sonoma State are tied for third at 13-5.
Rank and File
UCSD fell back into the "Receiving Votes" category in this week's AVCA national poll, released Monday. The Tritons had been ranked for the previous three weeks, the last two spent at No. 24 on the list.
Middle blocker Lauren Demos was back in the lineup this past week, playing at Cal State Stanislaus on Nov. 2 and at Chico State on Nov. 3. The sophomore had been out of action due to injury, last playing on Sept. 29 against Cal State Stanislaus at RIMAC Arena.
Against the Ranked
No. 25 Cal State San Bernardino will be the fifth nationally ranked team the Tritons have faced this season, following No. 13 Metro State (9/1), No. 18 Western Washington (9/7), No. 18 Chico State (9/28) and No. 22 Sonoma State (10/5). UCSD has gone 3-1 in those four match-ups.
UCSD is ranked fifth in the West according to the NCAA's regional rankings, which were released on Oct. 31. BYU-Hawaii tops the list and is followed by Western Washington, Grand Canyon and Cal State San Bernardino. Coming in after UCSD are San Francisco State, Central Washington, Western Oregon, Sonoma State and Chico State. The three regular season champions from the CCAA, PacWest and GNAC, along with five at-large selections, qualify for the NCAA West Regional.
Danielle Dahle was recently named a San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month for October. Dahle averaged 4.03 kills, 2.88 digs and 4.50 points per set over the month, leading UCSD to a 7-2 record, which included a six-match win streak. She posted double-doubles (kills and digs) in five of nine matches played and had at least 12 kills in all but one contest. She leads the Tritons in kills and points, and is second in digs and service aces and third in blocks.
Regarding the Coyotes
Cal State San Bernardino comes into Wednesday's match carrying an 18-7 overall record and a league-leading 15-2 mark in CCAA play. The 25th-ranked Coyotes returned to the AVCA national poll Monday for the first time since the second week of the season. Winners of their last seven and 15 of their last 16 matches, the Coyotes are ranked fourth in the West Region. Senior Camille Smith recently became the sixth player and first setter in school history to eclipse 1,000 career digs.
Regarding the Gators
San Francisco State is currently 18-7 overall and 13-5 in the CCAA, tied with Sonoma State for third place. The Gators are coming off a 2-1 showing last week, winning in four sets at Sonoma State before splitting their final two home matches of the year vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-0) and Cal State L.A. (0-3). SF State, which leads the CCAA in aces and digs, plays at Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night.
Regarding the Seawolves
Sonoma State has posted a 19-7 record this season and is tied for third place in the CCAA at 13-5. The Seawolves won both of their mathes last week, taking down Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills in straight sets. SSU has been victorious in eight of its last nine matches. Among league teams, the Seawolves rank first in kills, attack percentage, assists and points. They play at Cal State San Bernardino Friday before coming to La Jolla.
UCSD family and friends are coming together this season to remember former Triton volleyball player Karen Reis, who was tragically killed in Coronado in January of 2012. A recognition was held prior to the Cal State L.A. match on Sept. 15, at which the Reis family was presented with a "No. 1" jersey and a moment of silence was observed. The Tritons will wear a special insignia on their uniform jerseys all season. In addition, you may notice the "Reis Ripple" graphics on the pole pads at RIMAC Arena. These signify the positive impact that Karen had on everyone she met and how that impact trickled down from one person to another.
