LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by Sonoma State Saturday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 25-22, 26-24, 14-25 and 25-23.
UCSD fell to 19-9 overall and 14-6 in the CCAA. SSU improved to 20-8 on the season and is now also 14-6 in league play.
For the second straight match, the Tritons were held under .200 on the attack, coming in at .171 with 50 kills and 22 errors in 164 attempts. The Seawolves countered at .197, collecting 60 kills with 25 miscues in 178 attacks.
Freshman Sophie Rowe had a big night for UCSD, recording a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and 10 digs. She also chipped in with six blocks, two of those solo stuffs.
Setter Amber Hawthorne also posted a double-double by collecting 41 assists and 12 digs for the Tritons. Freshman Danielle Dahle finished with 15 kills. Libero Brittany Lombardi came up with a career-high 33 digs, the most by any Triton this season.
UCSD had a strong serving game, totaling eight aces to the Seawolves' two. Dahle, Lombardi and Rowe all had two apiece. The Tritons out-blocked SSU 11-8 as Sara McCutchan had seven.
Three Seawolves had 10 or more kills including Allyson Sather (15), Caylie Seitz (14) and Madelyn Densberger (12). Densberger also added two service aces and 15 digs. Nicole Gragnola led SSU defensively with 24 digs.
Cal State San Bernardino clinched its seventh consecutive CCAA regular season title, and a berth in the NCAA postseason, Saturday with a 3-1 win against San Francisco State. UCSD, Sonoma State and San Francisco State are locked in a three-way tie for second place and will head into the final week of regular season play aiming for an at-large spot in the NCAA West Regional.
UCSD plays at Cal State East Bay on Nov. 16 and Cal State Monterey Bay on Nov. 17. The Tritons defeated both teams earlier in the season at home.
