LA JOLLA, Calif. -
UC San Diego men's volleyball head coach Kevin Ring
has announced the addition of two National Letter-of-Intent signings. Griffin Galvin and Adam Martell will be joining the Tritons for the 2014 season.
"The continued success for UCSD Men's Volleyball depends on the quality of student-athletes we have joining our program," remarked Ring, who is heading into his eighth year at the helm. "We have that in Griffin and Adam as they are two dedicated, hard-working student-athletes that I have no doubt will be successful on the court and in the classroom. I want them to enjoy the remainder of their senior year of high school, but I am excited for next fall when they join our program."
Galvin is a 5-11 libero out of Vista del Lago High School in Folsom, near Sacramento. A four-year varsity player, Galvin has captained the Eagles to back-to-back Sierra Valley Conference and CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II crowns as a sophomore and junior, with his senior campaign still to come beginning in February. Already a three-time All-SVC First Team and two-time Sacramento All-Metro Team selection, he was chosen as the SVC MVP last season. Galvin also is a current co-captain for Northern California Volleyball Club (NCVC) 18-1 Black, based in Meadow Vista. He received a U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award this year for his work in the classroom, and intends to major in communication.
"Griffin will continue the tradition we've had here at UCSD of having a top-level libero," said Ring. "He is very good in serve-receive and as a defender."
Martell, a 6-7 opposite, comes to UCSD all the way from Pewaukee, Wis. He is currently a senior at Kettle Moraine High School in Wales, Wis. Martell is a first-team all-state, first-team All-Classic 8 Conference (C8C) and two-time Team Most Valuable Player honoree for a Lasers squad that placed third in the state just last month. He produced a team-high 14 kills to go with six digs and three total blocks in the state semifinals as Kettle Moraine completed the year at 20-10. An intended engineering major, Martell plays his club volleyball for North Shore Milwaukee.
"Adam has all the makings of a top-tier opposite," concluded Ring. "He will bring his strong attacking, serving and blocking to our team."
UC San Diego is less than a month away from opening its 2013 campaign, Jan. 4-5, at the eight-team UC Santa Barbara Asics Invitational.
