LA JOLLA, Calif. -
UC San Diego swimming and diving co-head coaches Corrie Falcon
and Matt Macedo
have announced five National Letter-of-Intent signees for the 2013-14 season.
The five newest Tritons join Zachary Yong out of Irvine's University High School as commitments for this early signing period. Yong, a World Championship Trials qualifier, was revealed last week.
The latest additions include four swimmers for the Triton women and one more for the men, with four from Northern California and one from Southern California.
The women's class is made up of Cypress Lampe, Austine Lee, Christina Vu and Cathy Woo, with Chandler Pourvahidi joining the UCSD men.
Lampe and Pourvahidi are both out of El Dorado Hills, about 22 miles east of Sacramento. Lampe (on left from her school's NLI signing ceremony), a current senior at Oak Ridge High School, is a sprint and middle-distance freestyle specialist. A senior at Vista del Lago High School in Folsom, Pourvahidi swims distance free and butterfly.
Woo, from Sacramento, is a sprinter who swims butterfly as well. She competes for Rio Americano High School and Arden Hills Swimming at the club level. Woo earned Sacramento All-City distinction for 2011-12, and like future teammate Yong, was a USA Swimming Scholastic All-America honoree for that same period.
Fremont product Lee is a sprinter who competes in individual medley and breaststroke events for Mission San Jose High School and Mission San Jose Aquatics (MSJA). She placed eighth in the 50 free (24.36 finals; 23.76 prelims) at the 2012 CIF North Coast Section Championships last May in Concord.
Vu is a native of West Covina who attends Walnut High School and swims sprint and middle-distance freestyle. She was a CIF champion in the 200 free relay as just a freshman for the Mustangs, and also is a member of the Brea Aquatics club program. "With the additions of Cypress Lampe, Austine Lee, Christina Vu and Cathy Woo, our women's roster continues to strengthen, especially in the sprint and middle-distance events," commented Falcon. "We are also extremely excited to add Chandler Pourvahidi to our Triton distance group. He is improving rapidly and we look forward to seeing what he can do in college."
Following a month off from competition in December, the Triton swimming and diving squads dive right into action in the new calendar year with a busy January that features six home dates, beginning Jan. 5 at noon against Cal State East Bay (women only) and Grand Canyon. The UCSD women and men are ranked first and third, respectively, in the CollegeSwimming.com/College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) national rankings for the NCAA Division II.
