SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Longtime UC San Diego head coach Brian McManus was recently named the Division II Women's Soccer Fall 2012 CaptainU Coach of the Year.

In his 26th season in charge, McManus guided the Tritons to the 2012 national title game in Evans, Ga., where they dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to West Florida. It was UCSD's 11th championship match under McManus as it vied for its eighth national crown, and 15th semifinal appearance in his 26 years.

Earlier, UCSD won a record eighth California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship, all under McManus, to earn an automatic NCAA Division II tournament berth for the 12th time in 13 seasons since moving up from Division III.

A 2-1 overtime victory over Western Washington in the NCAA Third Round in Denver, Colo., gave McManus career win No. 433, making him the winningest Division II coach of all-time, active or retired. Among all divisions, active or retired, McManus, now with 434 wins to his name, is fourth on the all-time list behind UNC's Anson Dorrance, UConn's Len Tsantiris and William Smith's Aliceann Wilber.

On CaptainU's list of honorees, McManus joined two other managers rooted in San Diego in Seamus McFadden of the University of San Diego and Mike Friesen of San Diego State University, the Division I men's and women's selections, respectively.

Top coaches in their respective sports and divisions were chosen for their teams' inspiring performances both on and off the field.

"The CaptainU College Coach of the Year awards recognize the top college coaches across the country for their exceptional leadership and accomplishments," said Avi Stopper, CEO of CaptainU. "It's inspiring to see the results they achieve - not just in the numbers they put up on the scoreboard, but in their devotion to helping students develop as athletes and human beings."
