LA JOLLA, Calif. - Alec Arsht, Will Pleskow and Adam Zernik of the UC San Diego men's soccer program were chosen recently to the USA Jewish team that will participate in the 19th Maccabiah Games 2013 in Israel this coming summer.

The selection process consisted of a pair of two-day tryouts attended by the three Tritons, with the first one taking place at Santa Monica (Calif.) College, Dec. 21-22, followed by the other session in Philadelphia, Pa.

Arsht was a junior All-American in central defense for a UCSD squad that finished 9-4-4 overall in 2012 and led the entire nation in Division II in team goals-against average (0.44) and shutout percentage (0.71). The Oak Park native earned All-West Region honors from Daktronics, Inc. (First Team), and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (Second Team), and was a first-team all-conference pick.

Pleskow is a Los Angeles product and junior transfer from the University of Washington who was a first-time Triton in 2012, appearing in 12 matches and scoring twice. Zernik, from Palo Alto, started four of 10 games played as a fourth-year senior midfielder last season for UCSD, providing one goal and two assists.

The USA will send participants to the Maccabiah Games in a number of other sports in addition to men's soccer, with over 8,000 athletes in all expected to attend what is the world's largest Jewish athletic competition. It is held every four years.

"We're all extremely excited about the experience and the chance to get to represent the USA and UCSD, as I believe that we will have the largest number of guys from one school on the team," said Arsht.

Arsht, Pleskow and Zernik will be in Israel from July 6-31, training while also touring some of Israel's top landmarks for 10 days prior to the start of competition. The 19th Maccabiah Games 2013 run from July 17-30, with the Opening Ceremony on July 18. For more information, visit MaccabiUSA.com and Maccabiah.com.

Meanwhile, Arsht and fellow junior and Triton goalkeeper Josh Cohen, the national leader in individual goals-against average (0.397) and save percentage (0.898), were both selected to the 13-player Jewish Sports Review (JSR) 2012 Men's College All-America Soccer First Team for Division II, III and NAIA. Kelcie Brodsky, the starting goalkeeper for national runner-up UCSD as a true freshman, earned All-America honorable mention on the women's side from the JSR.
