WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Senior first basemen Nicole Spangler of the No. 2 UC San Diego softball team has been named the Worth/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week. The announcement was made Monday by the league.
Spangler's offensive output helped lead the Tritons to a 3-1 opening weekend against Western Oregon. At the plate, she went 7-for-11, good for a .636 average, while tallying three doubles, four runs scored and seven runs batted in. She had at least one hit and one RBI in all four games and also drew a pair of walks against WOU.
In Saturday's 10-8 win over the Wolves, the Washington native was 2-for-2 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. In the series finalé, a 7-0 win, Spangler had another two hits, a pair of RBI and a run scored. She also recorded two hits in Friday's season opener.
Stephanie Jimenez of Cal State Dominguez Hills earned the season's first CCAA Pitcher of the Week honor.
The Tritons host a four-game set against Cal State San Bernardino this week to open league play. The first doubleheader is Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. while the second is Friday, Feb. 8 with first pitch scheduled for noon at Triton Softball Field.
