TRITONS FACE FIRST ROAD TEST OF 2013 IN ARIZONA
The 22nd-ranked UCSD baseball team takes to the road this week for the first time in the 2013 season. The Tritons left East Campus by bus on Thursday morning, Feb. 7, traveling to Phoenix, Ariz. A second straight three-game non-conference set awaits against Grand Canyon University at Brazell Stadium. UCSD is 2-1 coming off of a series victory at home over then-20th-ranked Colorado Mesa last weekend. The Antelopes have yet to play their opener. GCU is among other teams receiving votes outside the top 30 of the latest Collegiate Baseball News poll, as well as the preseason NCBWA West Region top 10.
The series opener at Grand Canyon on Friday, Feb. 8, is slated for a 6 p.m. PT first pitch following Opening Night festivities at Brazell Stadium. Single games will follow at 6 p.m. PT on Saturday night and 11 a.m. PT Sunday on getaway day. Friday's game will see Triton senior right-hander and staff ace Ryan Goodbrand, the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week, go up against sophomore right-hander Jorge Perez. On Saturday, sophomore right-hander Dan Kolodin draws his second career start, facing freshman left-hander Andrew Naderer in his college debut for the ‘Lopes. Sunday's finale will see sophomore left-hander Trevor Scott on the hill for UCSD against right-handed junior college transfer Trent Wilson.
All UCSD home games at Triton Ballpark this season will again feature a live online video stream and live stats, both free of charge. Weekday games during the conference season will also have audio commentary, with former Triton pitcher Tim Strombel (2007-08) calling the action. UCSD's conference opener against Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, Feb. 15 (6 p.m.), will mark Strombel's season debut. Fans can access live video and live stats from the Schedule/Results tab of the baseball page at UCSDtritons.com. Most road games will also at minimum have live stats available, with links active at that same location on the baseball team's Schedule/Results page. The three games in Phoenix this weekend will only have live statistics. Finally, starting lineups, live between-inning updates and other in-game news and notes can be found during home contests by following Triton Baseball all season long on the UCSD Athletics Twitter handle (@UCSDtritons).
SCOUTING GRAND CANYON
Grand Canyon University, located in Phoenix, Ariz., is a member of the Pacific West Conference (PacWest). The Antelopes finished 27-23 overall a year ago and 23-17 in the PacWest, good for third place behind league champion California Baptist (31-9) and Utah outfit Dixie State (25-15). GCU was rated eighth in the final West Region poll. Beginning this Friday night, the ‘Lopes open the season with 17 straight home games. Among key returners are junior Michael Pomeroy and senior Derek Mendoza, both of whom received All-West Region honors a year ago after finishing 1-2 in the PacWest in batting average at .422 and .407, respectively. Mendoza was the league's Co-Newcomer of the Year and garnered NCBWA All-America honorable mention. Friday night starter Jorge Perez, a sophomore right-hander, is back after posting a 3-3 win-loss record and 2.48 ERA in 2012. Senior right-hander Mark Jarrett is the bullpen ace, having led the conference with nine saves last year en route to All-PacWest First Team recognition. Andy Stankiewicz, a Pepperdine University alum and former Major League Baseball infielder with the Yankees, Astros, Expos and Diamondbacks, is entering his second season as the Grand Canyon head coach.
UCSD leads the all-time series between these teams, 33-20, and is 19-6 against GCU over the last 25 meetings. They last met for a two-game set in La Jolla in May, with visiting GCU earning the split, 10-4 (May 5), after UCSD had won the first match-up, 6-1 (May 4). Prior to that Antelope victory, the Tritons had won 16 straight in the series since another defeat in La Jolla, 7-2, on April 7, 2007. Since 2006, UCSD is 9-3 against the Antelopes in Phoenix, including eight consecutive wins at Brazell Stadium heading into this weekend. During a four-game sweep in La Jolla, Feb. 12-13, 2010, the Tritons outscored the ‘Lopes by an overwhelming 52-4 margin. The teams did not square off in 2011.
TRITONS IN THE NATIONAL POLLS
UCSD moved up one spot from No. 23 preseason to No. 22 in the latest installment of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II poll, released each Monday. The Tritons remained at No. 17 in the first in-season edition of the D2 Baseball News listing. The other two national polls for the NCAA Division II, conducted by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and College Baseball Lineup, have stuck with their preseason ratings thus far, with UCSD beginning the new year at No. 19 and No. 20 in those two rankings, respectively.
GOODBRAND PICKS UP SEASON'S FIRST CCAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK NOD
Ryan Goodbrand was named on Monday, Feb. 4, as the 2013 season's first Rawlings/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week. He tossed five scoreless, three-hit innings with six strikeouts in UCSD's 6-2 win over then-No. 20 Colorado Mesa on Opening Night last Friday, Feb. 1. It was the second weekly CCAA honor of his career.
SUSDORF STREAKING ON OFFENSE
Senior All-American centerfielder Danny Susdorf extended his career-best hitting streak to 20 games over the first weekend of the 2013 season. He had concluded his junior year on a 17-game run in 2012 (Apr. 19-May 19). This is his second career hit streak of double-digit games, following a 10-gamer late in 2011 (Apr. 30-May 14).
SUSDORF STREAKING ON DEFENSE, TOO
Danny Susdorf also has a lengthy defensive streak intact, having now handled 170 defensive chances in a row without an error, spanning 70 games dating back to his last charged error on April 29, 2011, at Chico State. He put away all 125 chances without a miscue in 2012 and 10 thus far to begin the 2013 season.
GOOD START, GOODY START
Ryan Goodbrand began his senior 2013 campaign similar to how he ended his junior year in 2012. The right-handed pitching ace tossed a workmanlike five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and no walks in baffling then-No. 20 Colorado Mesa on Friday night, Feb. 1. He retired six Mavericks on strikes and four more on ground balls of the 15 outs he recorded before exiting after 76 tosses on a 75-pitch limit for his initial 2013 outing. Goodbrand is now an undefeated 12-0 in his 16 career starts in a Triton uniform, with winning decisions in five straight appearances. He has gone a minimum of 5.0 frames in all 16 stints on the mound, with a pair of nine-inning complete games a year ago. UCSD is 14-2 when Goodbrand starts.
Junior infielder Garrett Tuck has made 75 straight starts and appeared in 82 consecutive games since late in the 2011 campaign. He and fourth-year junior teammate Nick La Face were the only two Tritons to have both played in and started all 57 contests a year ago. Tuck, second on the team in 2012 behind Danny Susdorf (84) with 77 hits, matched his single-game career high with a four-hit effort in the rubber-game victory over Colorado Mesa on Feb. 3.
