PHOENIX, Ariz. - The 22nd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team rode six shutout innings from ace Ryan Goodbrand and hung on late to defeat Grand Canyon University, 10-5, in the opener of a three-game non-conference series at Brazell Stadium on Friday night.

UCSD improved to 3-1 on the year, while the host Antelopes are now 0-1.

Goodbrand (2-0) spoiled Opening Night for the ‘Lopes, allowing just two singles and two walks over 6.0 innings with five strikeouts. His no-hit bid was broken up by a one-out infield single in the sixth. The senior right-hander retired 12 batters in a row in between a second first-inning walk and a fifth-inning error. Combined with last year's effort in La Jolla, Goodbrand has baffled Grand Canyon to the tune of a 2-0 record and 0.82 ERA with 11 strikeouts over 11.0 innings (4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB).

After back-to-back one-out walks in the first inning, a flyout put Antelopes at the corners, but Goodbrand got Steven Swingle to chase one and ended the threat.

The Tritons manufactured the first run of the night in the next half as senior first baseman Richard Seigel hit an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Tuck, stole third and came home on a groundout by Sam Michaels, a senior making his first plate appearance of the year as the starter at third base.

Goodbrand came right back out and posted a true shutdown inning while keeping everything on the infield with a called third strike, groundout and foulout.

Danny Susdorf's one-out infield single in the third was followed by redshirt freshman rightfielder Corbin Wirta's first career extra-base hit, an RBI double down the left field line.

Goodbrand kept dealing through a second straight perfect inning, everything again on the infield with a strikeout, popout and groundout.

UCSD continued its run-an-inning pace into the fourth, pushing across one of the unearned variety as Seigel reached via outfield error and wound up on second to lead things off. Tuck singled him to third, and it was 3-0 when Michaels grounded into a double play that enabled Seigel to trot home.

Following a flyout and a foulout, Goodbrand sprinted over to take Seigel's throw at first off a grounder to end a third straight 1-2-3 frame.

The Tritons added on a fourth straight singleton in the fifth when Susdorf doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Wirta's sacrifice fly.

In the bottom half, Goodbrand ran into some slight trouble due only to a one-out infield error. A groundout and a wild pitch put Garrett Jeffries at third, but Kyle Raidy watched strike three go by to keep it a 4-0 contest in favor of the Tritons.

The home sixth saw Goodbrand's no-hit run ended on a one-out infield single. A second successive single put Grand Canyon in business, but clean-up hitter Derek Mendoza fanned and Swingle flew out to Susdorf.

Junior shortstop Dillon Moyer just about single-handedly accounted for the fifth Triton run in the seventh as he doubled with one out, stole third and sprinted home on ‘Lopes catcher Swingle's awry throw.

UCSD then produced what looked at the time to be an inconsequential three-run eighth, only to prove critical. Seigel provided his second triple in as many games, a two-run effort to plate Justin Rahn, who had walked to lead off and stolen second, and Nick La Face, who had followed with a single. It was a fourth extra-base hit in two games for Seigel, all to right center. Tuck's double made it an 8-0 bulge.

The ‘Lopes exploded for five runs in their eighth, however, before the Tritons could register an out. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Mendoza, whose two-run single finally put the home team on the board. Swingle followed with a three-run home run to right center to slim the margin suddenly to 8-5. Following a one-out walk, a fourth Triton pitcher in the frame, Scott Zeman, struck out Ryan Moore looking and pinch-hitter Shane Soria swinging.

UCSD tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth as pinch-runners Gradeigh Sanchez and James Mossholder crossed on a bases-loaded walk to Tuck and a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Jonah Northrop, respectively.

Zeman finally shut the door after issuing a lead walk in the ninth. He  earned his first career save with four strikeouts over his 1.2 frames.

Junior right-hander David Hart spelled Goodbrand in the seventh and after back-to-back one-out singles, induced a 4-6-3 twin killing out of the tough-luck Raidy.

Seigel finished 2-for-4 with a triple, walk, three runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Susdorf was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs, while Rahn was 2-for-3 with two walks, one run and a steal. Tuck was also 2-for-3, with a walk. He and Wirta drove in two runs apiece.

For GCU, sophomore right-hander Jorge Perez (0-1) threw 5.0 innings and gave up four runs, three of them earned, on six hits and two walks. He struck out three.

UCSD and Grand Canyon resume their weekend series with another primetime match-up under the Brazell Stadium lights on Saturday night, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. PT.
