The winner of UCSD-LMU will face the victor of No. 5 Arizona State-Marist at 2:40 p.m. on Saturday. ASU is the second highest-ranked team in the tournament and is a perfect 6-0 leading into the weekend. The Sun Devils have swept play at the UCSB Winter Invite, and are off to a great start. UCSD is 3-4 all-time against ASU, having dropped the last four contests. Marist is 0-1 on the year dropping their season opener to Hartwick at home on Jan. 26. UCSD holds a perfect 8-0 all-time record against the Red Foxes. The losers between UCSD-LMU and ASU-Marist clash at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday.
The Tritons drew a familiar opponent, No. 15 Loyola Marymount, for the first round of the Triton Invitational. LMU, who will also be coming off a week away from competition, currently holds a 3-3 overall record, featuring conference win over Santa Clara at the UCSB Winter Invitational. The teams met two times in 2012, once during the regular season in Los Angeles, the other in the Western Water Polo Association Championship match. LMU took both contests, just edging the Tritons out 6-7 for the conference title. The Lions went 2-2 at last year's Triton Invite, with relative success holding a 15-5 record over the past five seasons from tournament play.
LIZOTTE TAKES KAP7 WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD JAN. 30
UC San Diego utility Sarah Lizotte earned KAP7 Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week on January 30 as the team was just one week into the 2013 campaign. Lizotte compiled 13 goals, five assists and five steals at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational. Her single-game high came in 11-6 win over conference opponent Sonoma State, where Lizotte posted six goals respectively.
After the Triton Invite, UCSD will take a week off from competition before heading to the UC Irvine Invitational. The Tritons return to Canyonview Pool the first weekend of March to host LMU on Friday, Mar. 1 before hosting UC Irvine on Sunday, Mar. 3. They will not play in front of a home crowd for nearly a month until they return April 11 to host Long Beach State. Lizotte leads the team in goals with 13 in four games. Lauren Finwall leads the Tritons with nine total ejections drawn, with Julia Kirkland and Melissa Bartow are close behind with eight. Freshman goalie Courtney Miller has grabbed 33 saves in just 15 quarters of play.
