WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -
UC San Diego's Kayla Hensel
has been name the Worth/California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week. The announcement was made Monday by the league.
Hensel's complete game performances in the circle led the second-ranked Tritons to a pair of CCAA victories over Cal State San Bernardino.
In Wednesday's 8-2 win over the Coyotes, the sophomore right-hander tossed a complete seven inning game, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out four batters.
Hensel followed up with five hitless innings of work in UCSD's 8-0 win over the Coyotes on Saturday at Triton Softball Field.
The Corona native walked just two and struck out five over her 12 innings pitched.
On the season, Hensel owns a perfect 5-0 record with a 1.06 ERA. She leads the Tritons in appearances (5), innings pitched (26.1), complete games (3), shutouts (2) and strikeouts (13). Opponents are batting just .179 against her.
UCSD has produced back-to-back CCAA award winners as senior first baseman Nicole Spangler earned Player of the Week accolades on Feb. 4.
The Tritons head to Tucson, Ariz., to take part in the Division II Lead-Off Classic Feb. 15-17. UCSD begins play Friday against Augustana (SD) at 11:00 a.m. followed by a match-up with Southeastern Oklahoma State at 1:00 p.m.
