WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -
UC San Diego senior right-hander Ryan Goodbrand
was announced Monday as the Rawlings/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-17.
Goodbrand (3-0) produced a third straight near-flawless start in No. 18 UCSD's 2013 conference opener against Cal State Stanislaus, a 4-0 victory last Friday night, Feb. 15, at Triton Ballpark. The Rancho Santa Margarita product tossed 7.0 scoreless frames to extend his shutout streak to 18.0 innings to begin the mew season. He allowed just three singles and two walks while striking out a career-high 11.
Goodbrand fanned two Warriors in each of the first two innings, three in the third when he needed to register four outs, and two more in the seventh, including the last batter he faced on the evening. He combined with freshman Troy Cruz (Chula Vista/Bonita Vista HS) on the four-hit shutout, UCSD's first of 2013.
Friday's win improved Goodbrand's career record as a Triton to a still-unblemished 14-0. He has earned the winning decision in seven straight turns on the hill, and gone at least 5.0 innings in all 18 appearances in a Triton uniform. UCSD is 16-2 when Goodbrand pitches.
Already a one-time Rawlings/CCAA Pitcher of the Week back on Feb. 4, Goodbrand was selected the season's first National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) West Region Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 12, with that award encompassing the first two weekends of the new campaign, Feb. 1-10. For his career, Goodbrand is a three-time Rawlings/CCAA and two-time NCBWA West Region Pitcher of the Week. He again advances to this week's regional ballot.
Cal State L.A. junior infielder Manny Acosta earned Rawlings/CCAA Player of the Week distinction after leading the Golden Eagles offensively in a four-game home sweep over San Francisco State. He hit .500 (7-for-14) and slugged .786 with four doubles, five runs scored and two RBI.
Goodbrand is slated to make his next start this Thursday afternoon, Feb. 21, at Toro Field in Carson in the opener of a four-game, split-venue CCAA series with Cal State Dominguez Hills. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. The teams will remain in Carson to contest another single game at that same time the following day, before the series concludes with a noon doubleheader at Triton Ballpark on Saturday, Feb. 23.
