LA JOLLA, Calif. - Despite a strong showing in doubles, the No. 28 UC San Diego men's tennis team had its three-match win streak snapped Wednesday as sixth-ranked Rollins earned a 6-3 win at Northview Courts.
UCSD won two of the three doubles contests but Rollins came back to take five of the six singles matches to clinch the victory.
"It was a very competitive day, but it was also an opportunity lost," said UCSD head coach Timmer Willing. "We played pretty well at most of the spots. We were looking good in several of the singles matches and they were tight all the way through."
Camill Salomon and Devon Sousa represented UC San Diego in the top doubles slot and defeated Will Kwok and Robin Marchione by an 8-4 score. Max Jiganti and Kona Luu were also victorious for the Tritons, taking an 8-5 win over Malte Christesen and Jacobo Herrero at No. 2.
Jiganti and Luu are now 7-2 as a team this season, playing all nine matches at No. 2. The win today was their fourth straight. Salomon and Sousa evened their doubles mark at 5-5. The duo has been a mainstay at No. 1 all year.
Luu was the lone two-time winner for UCSD Wednesday. In the No. 5 singles match-up, he defeated Herrero in straight sets, 6-3 and 7-5, to improve his season record to 6-4. The sophomore from Irvine has won his last four singles tilts.
At the top of the singles ladder, Kwok bested Salomon in a super tiebreaker by scores of 7-5, 4-6 and 10-7. Two other singles matches went to three sets. At No. 2, Jiganti won the opening frame against Marchione, 6-2, but dropped the next two, 6-2 and 6-3. Playing at No. 4, Ganesh Alagappan fell to Di Felice, 7-6, 4-6 and 6-3.
"I'm happy with the way we competed," said Willing. "Nobody gave up and we worked hard all the way through. However, it was disappointing. The guys saw an opportunity to beat a really solid team and we didn't get it."
UCSD dropped to 6-4 on the season while Rollins improved to an even 4-4.
The Tritons came into the day with wins in their last three duals, posting victories against Hawaii-Hilo (9-0), Whittier (7-2) and Western New Mexico (7-2).
Rollins traveled to La Jolla after already playing three of the top five squads in the nation. The Tars lost the three matches, falling against No. 2 West Florida (8-1), No. 3 Lynn (6-3) and No. 4 Barry (8-1).
Today's match was the first of nine consecutive home events for UCSD. Up next, the Tritons face another tough test in No. 5 Hawaii Pacific on Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m. The Sea Warriors blanked the Tritons, 9-0, in Hawaii on Feb. 17.
"We're going into the match with Hawaii Pacific with some confidence, knowing that we can compete with the number six team in the country."
