LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's basketball team earned the No. 3 seed for next week's NCAA Division II West Regional and will face sixth-seeded Grand Canyon in a quarterfinal match-up in Bellingham, Washington. Top seed Western Washington will host the eight-team Regional at Carver Gymnasium.
The UCSD and Grand Canyon game will be on Saturday, March 16, at noon. The semifinals will be contested on Monday, March 18 (12 p.m. and 5 p.m.), with the final scheduled for Tuesday, March 19 (6 p.m.).
Also traveling to Bellingham will be No. 2 seed Simon Fraser, No. 4 Chico State, No. 5 Cal State Monterey Bay, No. 7 Northwest Nazarene and No. 8 Academy of Art.
The winner of the UCSD/Grand Canyon game will face the winner of the Simon Fraser/Northwest Nazarene game in a semifinal Monday at noon.
UCSD is making its eighth appearance in the NCAA Division II postseason, also qualifying in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012. The Tritons advanced to the Final Four in 2007. As the top seed last season, they were defeated, 68-63, by Alaska-Anchorage in the Regional championship game in La Jolla.
The Tritons hold an 8-7 overall record in NCAA Division II postseason play.
UC San Diego (22-10) earned an automatic berth in this year's Regional by winning its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament title. The Tritons defeated Cal State L.A., 66-61, in the championship game on March 9 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.
Western Washington and Academy of Art also picked up automatic spots by winning the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Pacific West Conference tournament titles, respectively. The other five participants are at-large selections.
Grand Canyon enters next week's game with a 22-8 overall record. The Antelopes went 14-4 in the Pacific West Conference, finishing in a tie for second with Hawaii Pacific. GCU was knocked out of the league tournament in the semifinals, falling to Academy of Art in overtime by a score of 60-58.
UCSD and Grand Canyon have already met this season. At the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim on Nov. 10, the 'Lopes edged the Tritons, 64-62. UCSD was ranked eighth nationally at the time, while GCU was 13th. In the all-time series between the two squads, UCSD holds a 9-5 advantage.
The champions of each Regional advance to the Elite Eight, which will be held March 26-29 at Bill Greely Arena in San Antonio, Texas.
