UCSD Completes Play at Hawaii Spring Break Tourney

HONOLULU, Hawaii- The 15th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team completed play at the Hawaii Spring Break Tournament Saturday, falling to No. 8 Hawaii, 9-6, and No. 17 UC Santa Barbara, 12-9.

The Tritons, now 14-12 overall, were led by Rachel Brooks, Alexis Wieseler and Melissa Bartow, who each posted three goals on the day.

In the cage, freshman Courtney Miller blocked a total of 12 shots, finishing the four-game tournament with 25.

Game 1
While the Rainbow Wahine posted consistent numbers throughout the four quarters of play, the Tritons made a surge in the second stanza, scoring three goals to knot the score at 4-4 heading into halftime. Freshman Julia Kirkland netted UCSD's first goal of the quarter on a man-up situation, while Bartow scored twice in the span of a minute during the middle of the quarter.

The Tritons again tied the score, this time at 5-5, with a goal from Brooks at the 4:22 mark of the third quarter. However, Hawaii scored two straight goals to take a 7-5 lead into the final frame.

Jolene Guiliana scored UCSD's last goal of the game just :36 seconds into the final quarter after an ejection was drawn on Megan Ottoboni, getting the Tritons back within one at 7-6. Hawaii was able to score two more goals over the remaining seven minutes of play to earn the 9-6 win.

UCSD came away with five ejections drawn on UH.

Game 2
The Tritons came out slow, not scoring their first goal until the final 35 seconds of the opening quarter after drawing an ejection on UCSD's Claryann Olofsson-Loo.

Down 3-1, UCSD picked up the pace in the second, with Guiliana and Wieseler scoring back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of play to tie the score at three apiece. The two squads went back and forth through the middle of the quarter until the Gauchos made a run in the final two minutes of play, tacking on three unanswered goals to take a 7-4 lead at the half.

UCSD couldn't come back from the deficit as both squads tallied five goals the rest of the way.

Brooks, Bartow and Delgado each netted goals in the third quarter, while Sarah Lizotte and Brooks scored in the final eight minutes of play for UCSD.

Miller made eight saves for the Tritons while counterpart Ruth Milne turned aside seven shots for the Gauchos.

The Tritons continue road play, heading to Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational April 6-7. The tournament will feature games against Colorado State, Sonoma State, Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay.
