Release: Monday 04/22/2013

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego’s Sarah Lizotte has been named the 2013 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Player of the Year, while Melissa Bartow and Courtney Miller joined her as All-WWPA First Team honorees. The announcement was made by the conference Monday morning.

In addition, Alexis Wieseler was named All-WWPA Honorable Mention. Both Wieseler and Miller also recieved All-Freshman team honors.

Lizotte leads the Tritons in goals with 78 on the year, good for the No. 6 spot on the program’s Single Season Top-10 list. As a junior, the utility player now hold a career total 215 goals, making her way up the career record book at No. 3 on the top-10 list. This season, Lizotte has scored three or more goals in 14 different occasions, with a single game high six against Sonoma State. This year’s honor marks the first of the Riverside native’s career, while it is her second consecutive First Team honor. Lizotte has received conference recognition for her play throughout the season, earning KAP7 Player of the Week honors in three separate occasions; Jan. 30, Mar. 13 and Apr. 10.

Bartow, an all-freshman team honoree in 2011, leads the team in both penalties and ejections drawn, with a total of 66 this season. The junior primary two-meter player is currently tied for the career record of penalties drawn with 28, along with 2010 graduate, Stephanie Heinrich. Bartow posted a season high four goals in games against Claremont Mudd-Scripps and Cal State Monterey Bay, with one ejection drawn in each contest.

Freshman goalkeeper, Courtney Miller, has made an immediate impact stepping in as the starting goalie this season. The Honolulu native has averaged 8.5 saves per game over the course of the season, while knocking down ten or more shots in 15 games. Miller recorded a single game-high against Cal State East Bay on Apr. 7, tallying 17 saves as the Tritons earned the title of the inaugural CCAA Championship Invite. With a season total of 308 saves to date, she is currently listed with the second highest single season total. She also earned KAP7 WWPA Player of the Week on Mar. 20 for leading the Tritons to a 4-0 performance at the Aztec Invitational, with three of the four victories over fellow nationally ranked opponents.

Wieseler, a true-freshman, has posted strong offensive numbers despite taking on the role as UCSD's primary two-meter defender. With 62 goals, 12 assists, 43 steals, 11 ejections drawn and 24 field blocks, the Highland native is posting consistent numbers across the board. Wieseler posted a single game high seven goals with one steal in the 11-10 home victory over conference foe Loyola Marymount on Mar. 1. Wiesler earned conference Player of the Week honors for her performance against the Lions.

UCSD enters this week’s WWPA Championships as the top seed and will take on eighth seed Cal State San Bernardino Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the first round of action.
