The UC San Diego softball team was awarded the No. 8 seed in the NCAA West Regional and will travel to Arcata for the West 1 Sub-Regional, which will take place May 10-12 at HSU Softball Field. The selections and sites were announced by the NCAA Monday morning.
UCSD (33-22), making its third consecutive NCAA postseason appearance with the at-large bid, will play host and fifth-ranked Humboldt State (46-12) on Friday, May 10 at 4 p.m. (PT) in the opening round of the double elimination tourney. The Lumberjacks earned an automatic spot in the NCAA's by winning the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament this past weekend.
Also competing at the West 1 Regional are fourth-seeded Grand Canyon (39-17) and fifth-seeded Saint Martin's (39-14), which will play each other Friday at 1:30 p.m.
Dixie State (37-12) is the No. 2 seed and will host the West 2 Sub-Regional May 10-12 in St. George, Utah. Joining Dixie State will be No. 3 Sonoma State (36-19), No. 6 Cal State Dominguez Hills (34-21), and No. 7 Hawaii Hilo (39-17).
The winner of the West 1 Sub-Regional will face the winner of the West 2 Sub-Regionial in the West Super Regional, May 17-18 at a site to be determined. The winner of the best-of-three West Super Regional series earns a berth in the NCAA DIvision II College World Series, May 23-27 in Salem, Va.
UCSD won a national championship in 2011 and advanced to the title game again in 2012.
