UCSD Cross Country Opens 2013 in Dominant Fashion

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego cross country teams began the 2013 season in dominant fashion Friday, powered by two second-place individual finishes from Madison Tanner and Kellen Levy at the UCSD Opener.

Overall, the UCSD men brought home first place with all five scorers finishing inside the top-10, while the women also topped the field with all five runners crossing the finish line inside the top-10.

Pacing the women’s squad with a time of 15:38.7 was the junior Tanner, followed by sophomore Paige Hughes (3rd place) at 15:50.3, senior Chia Chang (4th place) at 16:02.3 and sophomore Marie Diaz (5th place) at 16:02.8.

Running in her first collegiate meet, freshman Ella Verhees impressed with a sixth place finish with a time of 16:05.4 to round out the scoring for the Tritons.

Cal State L.A. senior Sabrina Lopez was the top finisher on the 2.5-mile course, recording a winning time of 15:15.4.

The Triton women totaled 20 points for first place (1:19:39.50) and was followed by Point Loma with 70 points in second (1:24:37.60). Cal State L.A. (73), San Diego Mesa College (92) and San Diego Christian College (134) rounding out the team scoring.

The Triton men were just as impressive, led by Levy, a senior captain, with a second-place time of 21:39.9. The next three finishers were also from UCSD as sophomore Tareq Alwafai (3rd place) crossed the finish line with a time of 21:49.4, junior Daniel Hauptman (4th place) finished at 22:03.9 and junior Tanner Collins (5th place) came across at 22:05.3.

Senior Matt Lenehan (22:15.3), coming off a redshirt year closed out the scoring for the Tritons to finish seventh.

San Diego Mesa’s Steven Martinez won the four-mile event with a time of 21:31.6.

UCSD totaled 21 points, San Diego Mesa had 40 and San Diego Christian was third with 85. The Tritons finished with a team time of 1:49:53.80.

The Tritons will be back in action next weekend when they run in the annual UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14th. The race will take place at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course and is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m.
