BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 11 UC San Diego concluded play at the NorCal Tournament Sunday, splitting action on the day to finish 1-3 overall on the weekend. The Tritons (5-6) topped No. 20 Air Force (0-7) 15-7 in the first game, while dropping the final match of the tournament in sudden death against No. 15 Santa Clara (6-3), 11-10.
UCSD produced eight first half goals to propel the Tritons to a 15-7 win over AFA in game one.
The Tritons shut out the Falcons in the first period and found the back of the cage six times to lead 6-0 at the end of one. Michalko opened up the game with the first score, before Higginson and Luca De Vivo followed with goals of their own. Tommy Friedrich (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) finished the quarter with two consecutive scores for the Tritons.
UCSD extended its lead to 8-0 in the second before Air Force finally jumped on the scoreboard with 1:04 remaining before halftime. Chase Cockerill joined the action offensively, notching a score before Michalko tallied his second of the morning.
Coming out of intermission up 8-1, the Tritons tallied four more scores to lead 12-4 after three. Each Falcon goal was answered by the Tritons, with UCSD outscoring AFA 4-3 in the quarter.
The two teams exchanged goals in the final period, each scoring three times to make the final 15-7 in favor of UCSD.
Michalko and Higginson led UCSD with three scores apiece in the win.
To complement the six combined goals from Michalko and Higginson, UCSD received two apiece from Cockerill and Friedrich while Joe Dietrich, Andy Moore, Jeffrey Jarvis, Tician Toplak and De Vivo each found the cage once to round out the scoring in the win.
Josh Stedman and Dominic Vicino led the Falcons with two goals apiece, respectively.
In the concluding game of the day, the Tritons and Broncos battled into sudden-death overtime before SCU capitalized on a man-up advantage to win 11-10.
The two teams played a tight first half, with the Tritons trailing 4-3 at intermission.
UCSD came out strong in the third, tallying two scores to take its first lead at 5-4. Michalko and De Vivo provided the lead for the Tritons with scores. The Broncos responded before the period ended to knot the game up at five heading into the fourth.
The final period was a fight, as each team grabbed a lead before the other battled back to tie it up. The Tritons took control of the match after producing on a 6-on-5 advantage with a Higginson goal, jumping ahead 9-7 with 2:50 remaining. The Broncos didn’t give in, however, managing a score at the 2:15 mark before tying the game with 16 seconds remaining to force overtime.
UCSD and SCU continued the battle into the second half of overtime, where Jarvis put the Tritons in position to win after finding the back of the cage with 1:51 to go. The Broncos answered once again, scoring with seven seconds on the clock to force sudden-death overtime.
Following suit of the match, SCU drew an ejection and capitalized with a goal from Patrick Weiss to win in dramatic fashion over UCSD 11-10.
Higginson, De Vivo and Toplak powered the Tritons’ balanced scoring attack, tallying two each. Cameron Ravanbach (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) played brilliantly in goal, amassing a season-high 17 saves in the loss, respectively.
The Broncos received three goals, including the game-winning score, from Weiss. Matt Pritchett finished with 12 saves in the cage in the win.
UCSD will back in action this Wednesday, marking the home and conference opener for the Tritons. Head out to Warren Field for the welcome-week tailgate prior to the game against conference rival Loyola Marymount. The barbeque, co-sponsored by Triton Tide, Greek Life and Athletics, will start at 4 p.m. and carry over into the start of the game at 6 p.m. at Canyonview.
