TURLOCK, Calif. - California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) soccer award-winners were announced during a banquet Thursday night on the Cal State Stanislaus campus ahead of Friday’s start to the 2013 CCAA Championships, and UC San Diego’s Cassie Callahan came away a first-team selection for the second straight year.
Callahan, a local product out of Coronado (Coronado HS), made the All-CCAA First Team as a sophomore as well in 2012, following a 2011 rookie campaign in which she earned CCAA Freshman of the Year distinction and All-CCAA honorable mention.
The junior midfielder leads UCSD in goals (six), assists (tied-three), points (15), shots (32) and shots on goal (13) for the second year in a row. A team-best four of her strikes have been game-winners among the Tritons’ seven victories in 2013. Five scores, with three deciders, came in 15 CCAA starts.
In addition to Callahan, Kelcie Brodsky earned All-CCAA honorable mention. The sophomore goalkeeper out of Agoura Hills was a second-team All-CCAA pick in her first season of college soccer a year ago. In 2013, she has started 17 of 18 matches and produced a 1.16 goals-against average and 88 saves while posting five shutouts. All five of those clean sheets came in league games, among 15 starts (1.18 GAA, 73 saves).
With an overall record of 7-6-5, UCSD awaits the announcement of the field for the 2013 NCAA Division II Championship this coming Monday, Nov. 11, to see if it’s season will be extended. The selection show can be viewed live beginning at 4:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
