SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dropped dual meets to Division I rival UC Santa Barbara Saturday at UCSB’s Campus Pool.
The Triton men (1-1) were beaten by the Gauchos by the final score of 184-113, while the women (1-1) lost their competition, 172-123.
Among nine individual wins by UCSD swimmers on the afternoon, two each came from Sandy Hon, Nicholas Korth, Anji Shakya and Naomi Thomas. The Triton women’s foursome of freshman Austine Lee, sophomore Colleen Daley, junior Sierra Robbins and senior anchor Shakya was fastest in the 200 freestyle relay at the end of the day, in a time of 1:36.17.
Shakya was first to the wall in her specialty, the 200 free (1:51.40), and the 500 free (4:59.50). Hon swept the backstroke distances, going 58.64 in the 100 and 2:09.32 in the 200. A third senior, Korth took top honors in both breaststroke races, timing 55.65 over 100 yards and 2:00.47 over 200.

Freshmen Sasha Mitrushina and Natalie Tang each made their Triton debuts in the meet, with Mitrushina swimming 9:45.84 to place second in the 1000 free in his first collegiate race. Senior captain Lindsay Oosterhouse competed for the first time this season after missing the opener against Claremont-Mudd Scripps two weeks ago.
The Triton divers are at the Bulldog Diving Invite in Redlands next Saturday, Nov. 16, at 10 a.m. The swimmers will next be in competition in what is annually their top date of the fall portion of the season, the UCSD-hosted Arena Invitational. This year’s edition will be held at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Nov. 21-23.
