The UC San Diego softball program will tune up for the 2014 campaign with an exhibition at home against Concordia University of Irvine, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) member. The Tritons will host the Eagles this Monday, Jan. 20 at 1:30 p.m. at Triton Softball Field. Admission is free and parking permits aren’t required on the UCSD campus on a holiday. Live stats will not be available. There will be no live video coverage until the regular season begins.
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has yet to release their preseason poll, as well as the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Tritons finished 33-25 overall and placed second in the CCAA with a 24-12 record in 2013. Head coach Patti Gerckens’ squad was knocked out of the NCAA West Regional after suffering defeats to No. 5 Humboldt State (7-1) and Grand Canyon (8-3).
UCSD returns starters Caitlin Brown (C/1B, 2013 All-CCAA First Team), Kirsten Willmon (OF, 2013 All-CCAA First Team), Taylor Sepulveda (OF, 2013 All-CCAA Second Team), Callie Grant (3B/OF), Mya Romero (SS), Mckenna Clewett (SS/2B), Jennifer Manuel (RHP), Emily McQuaid (3B) and Amani Proctor (2B) in 2014.
Concordia claimed their first NAIA National Championship in 2013 and head coach Crystal Rosenthal was named the NAIA Softball National Coach of the Year. The Eagles finished the year with a 52-3 overall record and won the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) with a 16-0 record. Concordia has compiled a 108-7 record over the past two seasons, including a stretch of an NAIA record 44 consecutive wins during that span.
Following the exhibition, UCSD will host Western Oregon in a doubleheader on Opening Day on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 12:00 p.m. at Triton Softball Field. It marks the first of 18 consecutive home games to open the season for UCSD. A full schedule can be found by clicking here.
