SAN DIEGO - Coming off of a break for final exams, the UC San Diego men’s and women’s track and field programs returned to competition Friday on the first day of the 36th Annual Aztec Invitational at the SDSU Sports Deck.

Friday consisted almost exclusively of open events, alongside the conclusion of both the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon, which UCSD did not have any entrants in. Some invitational distance and field events also took place.

The men’s and women’s open and invitational hammer throw competitions were all held at the UCSD Throwing Field on Friday morning.

Triton sophomore Paige Hughes won the open 1500 in a time of 4:46.10, nearly a full second faster than BYU freshman Bryn Rhoner (4:47.02) behind her.

Tareq Alwafai, like Hughes a sophomore distance runner, was second on the men’s side in the open 1500, timing 4:01.94. Freshman teammate Chanan Batra was fifth in the same event in 4:03.72.

Sophomore Sean Cook was second (6’4”) in the open high jump for UCSD, while junior distance runner Carlos Bojorquez was third in the open 800 meters (1:53.35).

The Aztec Invitational concludes on Saturday at the SDSU Sports Deck, with action getting underway at 9 a.m.
