Swim Champions Korth and Shakya Named San Diego Stars of the Month for March
Release: Monday 04/08/2014
by UCSD

SAN DIEGO - UC San Diego swimming national champions Nicholas Korth and Anji Shakya were each named recently as San Diego Hall of Champions Stars of the Month for March.

Korth and Shakya were senior captains for the Tritons during the 2013-14 season.

Korth broke both of his own school standards in the breaststroke distances and won his second national title in the 200 on March 15 at the 2014 NCAA Division II Championships in Ohio. The Santa Clarita product became the first Triton to get under 53 seconds (52.92) in placing third in the 100 on March 14, before producing a new Division II record (1:54.45) in the 200 the next night, duplicating his feat from the 2011 NCAA meet as a freshman in winning the title in national-record time. With five more top-eight finishes, he left the UCSD program as an 18-time All-American.

Shakya clocked 4:49.51 in leading the 500-yard freestyle virtually from start to finish in Ohio on March 14 to top the podium for the second time in as many years at the NCAA Division II Championships, having won the 200 free in 2013. The Davis native was also fifth in the 200 free (1:49.25) and was part of four relays that reached the championship final. The second-place 800 free relay shattered the school record by over a second and a half at 7:22.00. With six more top-eight finishes, Shakya was a 19-time All-American for her Triton career.

Korth and Shakya join teammate Paul Li and water polo standout Sarah Lizotte from February and men’s basketball senior point guard James McCann (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon HS) from January to give UCSD five Stars of the Month so far for the 2014 calendar year.

Korth is a first-time SDHOC honoree, while Shakya is a two-time monthly selection for her career, having previously been recognized in February of 2013. She in fact was later chosen as a 2013 SDHOC Star of the Year.
