Paige Hughes Selected CCAA Track & Field Athlete of the Week
Release: Monday 04/07/2014

WALNUT CREEK - UC San Diego sophomore Paige Hughes has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the week of March 31-April 6.

The San Diego native (Cuyamaca College/Valhalla HS) won the 10000 meters at the 2014 Cal-Nevada Championships on Friday evening, April 4, at UCSD’s Triton Track & Field Stadium. She timed 37:04.39. Her closest competitor, from 11th-ranked Division I opponent San Diego State, was over 15 seconds back at 37:20.17. The race also featured runners from Long Beach State, UC Irvine and CCAA foe Cal State L.A., among others.

It was Hughes’ Triton debut at the distance in her first season in the track program, already putting her at No. 5 in the event in the UCSD record book. She became the first UCSD female to win an event at the Cal-Nevada Championships since Jacqueline Rose topped the podium in the 400 meters in 2012 in Claremont. Hughes’ 10 points aided in a seventh-place finish for UCSD, up from 10th a year ago.

The CCAA weekly honor is the first of Hughes’ career, and the second for a Triton track and field student-athlete during the current 2014 season. Junior All-American Nash Howe was previously selected back on March 17.

UCSD will split up its squads this weekend, with a larger contingent staying more local at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Claremont on Saturday, and a smaller segment made up primarily of national qualifiers heading to Tempe, Ariz., for the Sun Angel Classic on Friday and Saturday.
