WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UC San Diego placed a league-high seven players on the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Conference softball team, announced Thursday morning at the 2014 Softball Championships brunch in Stockton.
Caitlin Brown, Amani Proctor, Callie Grant and Alexis Edwards were placed on the All-CCAA First Team, while McKenna Clewett, Emily McQuaid and Katie Saunders were honored with second team distinctions.
The four players on the first team was also a league high, while the seven honorees marks the second consecutive season UCSD has totaled seven award winners.
Brown, a three-time All-CCAA selection and two-time first team honoree, batted .304 in league play with a team-high 24 RBI. The senior started all 32 games in conference action and slashed a .441 slugging percentage with four stolen bases. The Rancho Palos Verdes native was an at-large selection at utility.
Proctor receives her first All-CCAA selection after totaling a .376 batting average in 32 league games, while scoring 20 runs, recording three triples and 14 stolen bases. The sophomore from Clovis was a first team outfield selection.
Grant is a two-time league honoree after receiving an All-CCAA Second Team distinction a year ago. It marks the first team the sophomore has received first team honors. The outfielder from Chatsworth batted .442 inside league play, scored 31 runs, held an on-base percentage of .475, stole 11 bases and played a tremendous center field.
Edwards, a sophomore, had a career year inside the circle and totaled 11 wins in CCAA action. She held a 1.88 ERA in 104.0 innings and struck out 46. The Oxnard native receives her first All-Conference pitcher honor.
Clewett amassed a .337 batting average in league play and totaled a home run, 15 RBI, five doubles and a .453 slugging percentage in 32 games. The sophomore from Escondido earns her first such distinction at second base.
McQuaid batted .359 in conference and started all 32 games for the Tritons. The Monrovia native also stole eight bases and led UCSD with 88 assists at third base. The senior is now a two-time All-Conference selection.
Saunders started 24 games in conference and totaled a .359 batting average, scored 20 runs, recorded a team-high two home runs and knocked in 23 runs in league action. She recorded a team-high .526 slugging percentage and also stole six bases. The sophomore from Manhattan Beach earns her first All-CCAA distinction as an at-large selection at catcher.
The league’s Most Valuable Player was awarded to Cal State Monterey Bay’s Cori Reinhardt, while the Most Valuable Pitcher was given to Amanda Llerena from Sonoma State. Nicole Nobbe of Cal State San Bernardino and Tiffany Hollingsworth of Humboldt State were selected as Newcomer and Freshman of the Year, respectively.
Andre Kenney of Cal State Monterey Bay was tabbed the CCAA Coach of the Year.
UC San Diego has returned to the postseason for the fourth-straight season with a spot in the CCAA Tournament. The Tritons finished the regular season 33-14 overall and third in league play with a 22-10 mark. UCSD received the No. 3 seed in the championship and will face No. 2 Humboldt State Friday at 7 p.m. at Arnaiz Stadium in Stockton.
