UCSD Finishes 16th at NCAA South Central/West Regional


AUSTIN, Texas - The UC San Diego men's golf team completed its season Wednesday with a 16th-place finish out of 20 squads at the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin.

UCSD finished the tournament with a three-round total of 919, 55-over par. The Tritons carded a 317 Wednesday after posting a 297 Tuesday and opening with a 305 Monday. The team was up-and-down, finding itself in 11th place Monday and then improving to a tie for eighth following play Tuesday.

The top six teams from the regional advance to the National Championships, held May 19-23 in Allendale, Mich. Host St. Edward's ran away with the title, totaling a 14-over 878. Chico State and Hawaii Hilo tied for second (+30, 894), Cal State Monterey Bay was fourth (+33, 897), Western New Mexico finished fifth (+39, 903) and Simon Fraser grabbed the sixth spot (+40, 904).

The Tritons were sixth early on in Wednesday's third round.

Daniel Yang (San Diego/Westview HS) was UCSD's top finisher, placing in a tie for 31st after shooting a 227, 11-over par on the par-72, 6,909-yard course. The sophomore went 74-75-78 over the three day tournament.

The individual titleist was Derek Oland of Midwestern State, who finished with a 4-under 216. Oland carded a 5-under 67 Wednesday, the low round of the tourney. Enrique Livas of St. Edward's placed second (-1, 215) and Chris Shimomora of Hawaii Hilo took third (even, 216).

Also on the course for the Tritons were Lewis Simon (T-42nd, 229), Clayton Yamaguchi (T-42nd, 229), Jeff Roseth (T-96th, 243) and Jay Lim (T-104th, 245).

Lim and Yang each shot a 78 Wednesday, the lowest score for the Tritons during the round. Simon's 71 in the second round was the only under-par round for any UCSD player.

Seven of the South Central/West Regional teams are ranked among the nation's top-25, including Cal State Monterey Bay (No. 3), Chico State (No. 5), Western New Mexico (No. 9), Cal State Stanislaus (No. 12), St. Edward's (No. 18), Hawaii Hilo (No. 22) and Sonoma State (No. 23).

Along with UC San Diego, Colorado School of Mines, Cameron, Simon Fraser, Dallas Baptist and Western Washington are receiving votes in the most recent GolfWorld/Nike Coaches' Poll.

UCSD was competing in its third consecutive NCAA postseason.
