INDIANAPOLIS - UC San Diego will be the host and Triton Ballpark the site of the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship West Regional, as announced Sunday evening by the NCAA.
The six-team, double-elimination tournament begins Thursday, May 15, and runs through either Sunday, May 18, or Monday, May 19.
All six West Regional participants appeared in the most recent Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll on May 5. The 18th-ranked Tritons (35-14), as the No. 1 seed, will welcome, in seed order, ninth-ranked 2013 West Region runner-up Chico State (39-13), No. 14 California Baptist (37-13), No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona (32-15), No. 29 Dixie State (35-15) and No. 30 Sonoma State (27-16).
Chico State, Cal Poly Pomona and Sonoma State are all fellow California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foes of UCSD, with California Baptist and Dixie State both hailing from the Pacific West Conference (PacWest). The CCAA squads in the regional field also made up the four-team CCAA Championship, while Dixie State and CBU finished 1-2 in the PacWest standings.
UCSD is the only automatic qualifier of the six, having wrapped up the program’s record sixth CCAA Championship title Saturday night in Stockton. The remaining two conferences in the West Region, the PacWest and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), currently do not receive automatic bids.
Three games will be contested on each day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 15-17, with start times designated as 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The West Region title game is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 18, at a time to be determined, with the possibility of an if-necessary nightcap. Should California Baptist still be alive in the tournament at the conclusion of play on Saturday, however, the final round would shift to Monday, May 19.
Thursday’s confirmed schedule has California Baptist taking on Cal Poly Pomona at 11 a.m., Chico State and Dixie State matching up at 3 p.m., and host UCSD taking the primetime slot in its first meeting of the year with CCAA rival Sonoma State at 7 p.m. The Seawolves nabbed the conference’s regular-season banner.
Single-day ticket prices are $8 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors 65 and older. Tournament passes can also be obtained at a rate of $25 for general admission and $15 for students and seniors. Children aged seven and younger will be admitted free. Tickets will be available for purchase 60 minutes prior to the start of the first game each day.
Parking permits are required on the UCSD campus on weekdays, and thus on Thursday and Friday for certain, and Monday should the regional advance into the extra day. They can be purchased at the machine near the entrance to the Triton Ballpark parking lot. No permits are needed to park on Saturday and Sunday.
All games of the West Regional will feature a live video stream, free of charge with no subscription required, and live stats. Links will be accessible when the tournament central page becomes active.
A total of eight six-team regionals will be contested in the coming week. The West Region champion will be joined by the other seven regional winners in Cary, N.C., site once again for the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. That final round takes place May 24-31, with the West champion opening as the road team against the Southeast Regional winner this season based on a seven-year rotation.
UCSD will be making its seventh NCAA Division II Championship appearance, with a previous record of 15-12. The Tritons are back in the 48-team field after just a one-year hiatus following six successive berths from 2007-12. Triton Ballpark was previously the host of the West Regional in 2011, with Sonoma State advancing.
