ALLENDALE, Mich. - Carlos Bojorquez and Dan Golubovic competed for UC San Diego on the first day of the 2014 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Grand Valley State University Track & Field Stadium Thursday.

The three-day meet is being co-hosted by GVSU and the West Michigan Sports Commission. UCSD has a total of five student-athletes present at this year’s edition.

Bojorquez, a San Diego native and sophomore out of San Diego Mesa College and Kearny High School, ran in the first of two preliminary heats of the 1500 meters in the afternoon session on the track, timing 3:56.20. He crossed the finish line in fifth in his heat, with the top four in each race earning automatic advancement on to Saturday’s final, alongside the next four fastest times. The second heat got out much quicker, with a total of nine entrants ultimately besting his time. Bojorquez was narrowly denied the final in 14th. He was the No. 18 seed out of 20 participants with a personal-record entry time of 3:50.16.

Golubovic, a redshirt freshman who, like Bojorquez, was making his NCAA Championships debut, kicked off the meet in the decathlon in the morning. He is 16th out of 16 competitors at the halfway mark with 3132 points. Chico State senior J Patrick Smith leads with 4091 points.

The product of Manhattan Beach (Mira Costa HS) sprinted 11.83 in the 100-meter dash (15th) for openers. Golubovic’s best performance came in the shot put, where he threw a personal-record 37’3” on his initial toss, stretching his previous best of 36’11.75” from the conference meet. The distance put him at 12th for the shot. In the high jump, he attained a height of 6’0” for 12th. His remaining marks were 19’9.75” in the long jump (16th) and 54.18 in the 400 meters (16th).

On Friday, May 23, Golubovic will contest the final five events of the decathlon, beginning at 6:30 a.m. PT with the 110-meter hurdles. The discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 will follow. Junior All-American Sabrina Pimentel runs in prelims of the 800 meters at 3:15 p.m. PT, with coverage of that race available live on NCAA.com.
