UCSD Completes Four-Game Sweep of St. Martin's
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego softball team completed a four-game sweep against non-conference opponent St. Martin's Sunday at Triton Softball Field. The Tritons earned a 3-1 win in the opening game behind a three-run home run from freshman Kelsi Maday and recorded a season-high 10 hits in the second game to win 2-1. Maday drove in all five Tritons runs on Sunday.
The Tritons defeated the Saints by scores of 3-0 and 3-2 Saturday, and improve to 5-1 on the season with this weekend's sweep.
St. Martin's took an early lead on Sunday afternoon. The Saints got their first three batters on base with a single, a fielder's choice and a walk. But despite having bases loaded with no outs, the Tritons defense stayed strong and escaped the inning giving up just one run on a walk.
After leaving three runners on base in the first two innings, the Tritons scored all three runs of the game on Maday's first career home run in the third.
McKenna Clewett led off the inning by drawing a walk. Then with two outs, designated player Lauren Sanders singled to put two runners on for Maday. Maday cleared the fence in center field to give UCSD the eventual 3-1 victory.
With the two run lead, Hannah Duarte continued her strong start to the year in the circle by throwing her first complete game of the season. Duarte fanned a career-high seven batters, five of which she caught looking.
Mo Omori put on a stellar performance in her first complete game of the season. Omori gave up just one run on six hits while striking out two batters en route to her second win. With her performance in game two, Omori's ERA improves to 0.44.
Clewett went 3-for-4 in the second game with a double and Sanders, who leads the team with a .467 batting average, hit two singles in her three at bats.
So far this season, the Tritons pitching staff has combined for a 0.83 ERA while striking out 21 batters in 42 innings.
UCSD begins California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play next week, hosting San Francisco State for a pair of doubleheaders on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14.
