Ian Macauley joined the University of California San Diego men's soccer coaching staff as an assistant in late March of 2015. The 2018 season marks the fourth of his return to the program, having played collegiately as a Triton under current head coach Jon Pascale.

Macauley was part of the 2016 National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II West Region Coaching Staff of the Year, as the Tritons produced their best season since moving up from the Division III level in 2000. UCSD finished 19-3-2 overall, with three trophies, all program firsts, for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season, CCAA Tournament, and West Region. The Tritons advanced all the way to the national semifinals, falling 2-0 to eventual champion Wingate (NC) in Kansas City, Mo.

In addition to his duties at UCSD, Macauley coaches club soccer in the LA Galaxy San Diego system after a previous affiliation with Rancho Santa Fe Attack.

Macauley came back to La Jolla after attaining his initial college coaching experience with the men's soccer team at Academy of Art University in San Francisco from February of 2014 through February of 2015. He assisted in the recruiting process there in addition to on-field coaching. While he was with the Urban Knights, Macauley simultaneously served as an assistant coach for the boy's varsity program at San Francisco University High School during the 2014 season, with the Red Devils finishing as CIF runners-up. He was also a girl's U-11 coach in the SF Aftershocks club system, and gave private lessons and clinics for youth with SoccerInsight.

Macauley appeared in 19 matches as a midfielder and fill-in center back, with nine starts, over three seasons for Pascale from 2010-12. He is a local product out of Encinitas and a 2008 graduate of nearby La Costa Canyon High School. Macauley earned his UC San Diego undergraduate degree in history in 2013. Born in La Jolla, he is an avid surfer, and a season ticket holder of Club Tijuana, or Xolos, of the Liga MX.
