Former olympic rower, Susan Francia, was named an assistant coach for the UC San Diego women's rowing program in September of 2016.

Francia comes to UCSD after 10 years of rowing for the United States Olympic Rowing Team. She competed in and won gold at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. By the end of her career, she had gathered five world championship titles and attained a No. 2 world ranking among female rowers for three years. In 2008 and 2009, she was voted to the Crew of the Year. In 2010, she was awarded the Female Athlete of the Year by peer vote.

After her career as an olympic rower, she began and currently is coaching the United States Junior Rowing Team. She helps with developing and executing a training plan for elite-level rowers and assists in scouting and recruitment of other prospects of the same caliber. Under her guidance, a US women's 8+ boat won bronze at the Junior World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Francia currently is the head coach of the local San Diego Rowing Club, beginning her term back in 2012. She coaches and mentors high school age girls six days a week, emphasizing team cohesion and competitiveness. Her dual rowers achieved silver in 2016 and her quad rowers took bronze in 2014 and 2015 at the Youth Nationals. In addition to coaching, she also led fundraising efforts to collect $30,000 to allocate to necessary areas of the program.

Francia also currently works at ORA Inc. as a business development associate. Her main duties involve identifying, assessing and tracking new business opportunities and supporting activities for the development of strategic and product plans.

Francia is an alumna of the University of Pennsylvania, graduating Cum Laude in 2004 with a bachelor degree in sociology of law and deviance. Afterwards, she obtained a master's degree in criminology. She currently is a candidate for a master's in business administration at UCLA. She is expected to finish that degree in 2018.
