HAYWARD, Calif. - Dalayna Sampton captured her second double-double of the season Saturday night in UC San Diego's 59-47 victory at Cal State East Bay in Hayward. It was UC San Diego's seventh-consecutive win.
UCSD improves to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). East Bay drops to 8-7 overall and 5-3 in CCAA action.
Sampton led all scorers with 16 points and all rebounders with 12. She was .667 percent (6-9) from the field and sunk four of her seven free-throws.
Elayshia Woolridge led the Pioneers in scoring with 11 points. Morgan Greene and Remy Puou each grabbed nine boards.
UCSD led in assists (11-10) and blocks (5-3) while limiting turnovers to 12.
A strong defensive initiative from UC San Diego meant that Cal State East Bay finished the contest at 30.4 percent (17-56) shooting. After halftime, the Tritons shot 45.8 percent while holding the Pioneers to just 21.4 percent.
"We competed and found a way to win," said UCSD head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "Different people stepped up to make big plays and as a team, we made adjustments to be successful."
Going into halftime, the Tritons trailed the Pioneers 31-27 after shooting just 27.8 percent (5-18) in the second quarter.
A renewed effort on the defensive end allowed UCSD to limit East Bay to just four points in the third quarter, while scoring 17 itself. Buckets from Yang, Sampton and Mikayla Williams helped to capture and extend the lead until the final seconds of the game.
UC San Diego returns to Northern California to take on San Francisco State on Jan. 13 and Sonoma State on Jan. 14. Tip-off for both games is set for 5:30 p.m.
