SAN RAMON, Calif. - University of California San Diego senior outfielder Jack Larsen has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 6-12.
Larsen, a fourth-year Triton out of Mission Viejo and Capistrano Valley High School who has been chosen to the All-CCAA First Team in back to back years, is UCSD's first weekly honoree for the 2017 season, and a four-time selection for his career.
Larsen was No. 24 UC San Diego's (6-2) top player during a 3-1 non-conference series victory against Concordia Irvine over the weekend. He started all four games in right field and hit .429 (6-for-14), second best on the squad, with team highs of six runs, six hits, five RBI and a .714 slugging percentage. Larsen had a double, home run, stolen base, two walks, three hit-by-pitches, and also handled all five putouts cleanly over the weekend.
In Friday's opener in La Jolla, Larsen went 2-for-4 with a double and matched his single-game career high by scoring three times in the 14-0 rout. In the shortened nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader in Irvine, he opened his home run account for 2017 by launching a three-run shot that broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning of a game UCSD eventually won 7-6 in eight innings.
Finally on Sunday, Larsen's two-run single through the right side that gave the Tritons a 5-2 lead in the sixth, proved to be the decisive hit in a 5-4, series-clinching triumph back at home. He reached base in all five plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with two hit-by-pitches, two runs, two RBI and his first stolen base of the year.
UCSD hosts Western Oregon (1-1) in a weather-altered, non-conference doubleheader this Thursday afternoon, Feb. 16. First pitch at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla is set for 2 p.m., for two regulation nine-inning contests. With inclement weather expected on Friday and Saturday, dates and times of the remaining two meetings of the intended four-game weekend series are entirely tentative and to be determined. Every effort will be made to play them. Fans should stay tuned to UCSD Athletics' official Twitter account @UCSDtritons, and UCSDtritons.com, for updates. Both games Thursday can be viewed in high definition on UCSDtritons.tv.
