Release: Wednesday 02/15/2017
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego softball team split its doubleheader against Azusa Pacific Wednesday at Triton Softball Field. UC San Diego came from behind to walk off a winner in the first game, 4-3, before the Cougars outlasted the Tritons in 12 innings in game two, 4-1.

With the split, 17th-ranked UCSD snaps a nine-game win streak and moves to 9-1 overall. The Cougars are 6-3 overall.

Junior outfielder Kelsi Maday ended the day with two RBI and two sacrifice hits. Ashley Chestnut provided three hits with an RBI and sophomore Caitlyn Weisner had two hits and an RBI.

The Cougars’ Jenna Gorman led the offense behind three RBI and three hits.

GAME ONE
UCSD used three runs in the seventh inning to come from behind and secure the one-run victory.

Junior Kendall Baker put the Tritons on the board in the bottom of the first after scoring off an error by the APU second baseman.

The Cougars’ Abry Moreno hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to knot the game, 1-1. APU scored two runs in the sixth inning to give the visitors the 3-1 lead.

Lauren Sanders led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double to left center. Baker followed with a single before Danica Kazakoff hit a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. Maday hit a two-run single to knot the game, 3-3. With the bases loaded, Weisner drew the walk-off walk to score Maday and seal the victory.

The Tritons' Lauren Brown pitched 5.1 innings. She allowed three runs and tallied four strikeouts. Senior Milana Casillas came in relief of Brown and was credited with the win after allowing no hits in 1.2 innings of work.

The Cougars’ Carly Xeploeas pitched all seven innings and earned her second loss of the season.

GAME TWO
UCSD came from behind again to tie the game in the sixth inning and forced extra innings before the Cougars scored three runs in the 12th to come away with the win. This marks the first time the Tritons have played more than 10 frames since the 2014 season, when they fell to Humboldt State 6-5 in 13.

The game remained scoreless until APU scored a run off a fielding error from the UCSD first baseman.

In the sixth inning, Chestnut hit a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Maddy Lewis and ultimately send the game into extras.

Neither team could reach home plate until APU scored three runs in the 12th inning to hand UCSD its first loss of the season. The Cougars’ Cayla Broussard scored off a fielding error by the Tritons shortstop before Gorman hit a two-run double to seal the victory.

Freshman Lizzy Beutter and Casillas split time on the mound for UCSD. Beutter pitched 5.1 innings and did not allow an earned run. Casillas came in relief of Beutter and was credited with the loss after giving up two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work.

Ariana VonZboray earned the win after pitching five innings without giving up a run for APU.

UCSD will return to Triton Softball Field this Sunday, Feb. 19, when it hosts No. 7 Adelphi for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
