UC San Diego Takes on UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine in Home-Opening All-UC Challenge
Release: Saturday 03/04/2017
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's and women's track and field programs competed in their 2017 home opener, the All-UC Challenge, Saturday afternoon at Triton Track & Field Stadium.

Both UC San Diego squads finished second behind UC Santa Barbara and ahead of UC Irvine. The Triton men totaled 134 points, with the Gauchos accumulating 177 and the Anteaters 63. On the women's side, UCSB (169.5) topped UCSD (133.5) and UCI (72).

The main highlight for the Tritons was senior Chrissi Carr bettering her own school record in winning the pole vault. She turned in a mark of 13'1.5" to outdo the field by a full foot, her previous school mark at 12'6.25" from a year ago. Carr also became the first Triton to officially book her trip to the 2017 NCAA Championships in Tampa, Fla., in May, as the automatic qualifying standard is exactly 13'1.5". The Atascadero native will be making a third successive appearance at the NCAA meet.

Senior Khalil Flemister produced an NCAA qualifier for the men, his of the provisional variety, in winning the triple jump (48'4"). The pro standard is 47'9.25". Flemister now ranks fifth all-time in UCSD history in that event.

The other two provisional qualifiers came from newcomers Chelsea Challacombe and Arik Nesbit in the high jump and triple jump, respectively. Challacombe won the high jump with a height of 5'6", hitting the pro standard on the nose while defeating senior All-American teammate Savanna Forry (5'4.25"), the season's first California Collegiate Athletic Association Field Athlete of the Week. Nesbit leapt 48'2.5", sixth in Triton history, to place second behind Flemister.

Individual events winners on the track were Nicholas Rack in the 110-meter hurdles (14.63), Avery Schulhofer in the 100 dash (12.18), Ella Verhees in the 800 (2:17.59), Josef Polk in the 400 hurdles (55.16) and Paul Doan in the 200 (22.05). Schulhofer was just .03 seconds off of her personal best. Doan was also third (10.76) in the 100 behind UCSB's Sike Azu-Irondi (meet-record 10.55) and UCI's Lloyd Sicard (10.65).

The women's 4x400 relay of Jackie Chalmers, Christina Winn, Kelly Strand and anchor Meghan Fletcher timed 3:56.98 for first place.

UCSD student-athletes won nine events in all on the day.

UC San Diego remains in home action next weekend, hosting the annual San Diego Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, March 11. The first events at Triton Track & Field Stadium on North Campus in La Jolla get under way at 12 p.m. Parking is free.
