LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego softball team took both games in a doubleheader against San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, Friday at Triton Softball Field. UC San Diego earned a decisve 10-2 victory in five innings in game one before shutting out the Gators 4-0 in the nightcap.
With two wins, UCSD improves to 14-4 overall and 7-3 in conference play. The Gators drop to 3-11 on the season and 2-8 in the CCAA.
The Tritons finished the game early, in five innings, after scoring four runs in the fourth inning to take a seven-run lead and adding one more in the fifth to win by eight.
Baker kicked things off in the second inning, reaching on a fielding error from the Gators third baseman before swiping second base. Lewis hit an RBI single down the right field line to give the Tritons a 4-0 advantage.
SF State notched its first run of the game in the top of the third inning after an RBI double from Aryn Guzman. However, the Tritons answered in the bottom of the inning to with an RBI single that scored junior Kelsi Maday.
The Gators earned their second run in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI double from Kasie Adriano to make it a 5-2 ball game. The Tritons broke open the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs, aided by a SF State error. A sacrifice hit from Lewis brought home Danica Kakakoff before Baker scored on a fielder’s choice. An error from the visitors second baseman scored Maday. Rachel Phillips capped the inning with an RBI single.
Maday hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to give UCSD an eight-run lead that sealed the early victory.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Lauren Brown (4-1) threw all five innings for UCSD and earned her fourth win of the season. She struck out one, allowed two runs and two walks.
Megan Clark (1-6) earned the loss for the Gators’ after pitching 4.1 innings and giving up eight earned runs.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Lizzy Beutter gave UCSD a four hit, complete game shutout as the Tritons won 4-0.
UCSD struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Maday scored on a fielding error by the SF State center fielder.
Baked hit a single into center field that brought home Kazakoff and gave the Tritons a 2-0 lead.
Lindsey Cassidy (2-5) tossed a complete game for SF State and earned the loss after giving up two earned runs.
As a team, UCSD stole six bases on the day with Baker and Maday tallying three apiece.
UCSD closes out the four-game series against the Gators on Saturday, March 4 with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
