Release: Friday 03/10/2017
HAYWARD, Calif. The University of California San Diego softball team fell in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action to Cal State East Bay Friday afternoon in Hayward. UC San Diego dropped both of its games in a doubleheader, suffering a 5-0 loss in game one and a narrow 4-3 defeat in the nightcap.

After dropping both games, UCSD falls to 13-7 on the season and 8-6 in conference play. CSUEB improves to 10-10 overall and 6-10 in the CCAA.

The Pioneer defense held the Tritons scoreless and only allowed one hit in seven innings of play.

Neither team could get things going on offense until CSUEB broke open the scoring with five runs in the fifth inning. The Pioneers scored four earned runs in the frame and one unearned run after Belle Placencia made it across home plate off an error by the UCSD first baseman.

UCSD’s only hit came in the top of the third inning when Danica Kazakoff singled to third base.

Sophomore Lauren Brown was credited with the loss after surrendering all five runs in 4.1 innings of work. Freshman Lizzy Beutter came in relief of Brown and threw 1.2 innings, allowing one hit.

The Pioneers’ Abby Greer earned her fifth win of the season after throwing a complete game and only giving up one hit. She tallied two strikeouts.

The Triton defense committed four errors that ultimately led to three unearned runs for CSUEB.

Sophomore Maddy Lewis put UCSD on the board first after scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning. Danielle Stedman hit an RBI double down the left field line to give the Tritons a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the third inning when Ashley Allen made it home off an error by the Triton short stop. CSUEB capped its scoring in the fourth inning with three runs.

Lauren Sanders singled through the left side to score Alanna Phillips in the sixth inning but it wasn’t enough as UCSD suffered its second loss of the day.

Beutter pitched 3.2 innings and earned the loss after giving up one earned run. Brown came in relief of Beutter and tallied one strikeout in 1.2 innings of work.

For the Pioneers, Bailee Glover threw a complete game and earned her third win of the season. She gave up three earned runs and totaled four strikeouts.

“It was a disappointing day,” said head coach Patti Gerckens. “We will regroup and come out hard tomorrow”.

UCSD will close out the four-game series with CSUEB with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 11. Opening pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
