IRVINE, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's rowing team took home the 2017 Berg Cup Saturday as the Tritons' Varsity 8 boat beat out four other crews for the victory in Orange County.
UCSD's V8 crew (coxswain Marie Kawahara, Nicole Hammonds, Catherine Mosher, Sydney McGuire, Tonya Khounani, Evelyn Brady, Alana Zaleski, Sarah Moore, Brooke Campbell) won the race with a time of 6:47.01, almost 10 seconds ahead of second-place Humboldt State (6:56.95).
Orange Coast College came in third (7:14.05), UC Irvine was fourth (7:29.15) and Long Beach State placed fifth (7:51.83).
"We competed very well top to bottom and improved on many things from last week's race," said UCSD head coach Colin Truex. "It was great to see the V8 get the win and take home the Berg Cup for the first time since 2007."
The Second/Third Varsity 8 event also saw a Triton first-place finish, with their 2V boat (coxswain Amber Go, Sierra Colvin, Storrey Lance, Jaida Aikens, Brianna Lehane, Jennifer Dutton, Stephanie Solomon, Jordan Levy, Amber Harris) crossing the line at 6:59.03.
Humboldt State was second (7:06.09) and was followed by UCSD's 3V boat (7:10.35). Humboldt's 3V crew brought up the rear (7:12.45).
OCC took the first place slot in the Novice 8 race, recording a time of 7:32.50. Humboldt was second (7:40.60) and UCSD took third (7:48.46).
"I believe we have a special group this year and their best is yet to come," said Truex.
Up next, UC San Diego takes to home waters on Mission Bay at the annual San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2. Races will begin at 7:00 a.m on both days.
