LA JOLLA, Calif. – The 18th-ranked University of California San Diego women’s water polo team could not get things going offensively in the first three quarters and fell to No. 6 UC Irvince by a score of 6-3, Sunday at Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla.
UCSD is now 14-14 on the season. UCI improves to 17-6.
The Triton defense held sixth-ranked UCI to only six goals, tallying nine steals and 10 exclusions drawn. However, UCSD suffered offensively and was limited to three goals, all coming in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Krista Schneider notched one goal and grabbed a game-high three steals. Junior Kayla Fedler had a goal and two steals and senior Alexis Wieseler tallied a goal, dished out one assist and had one steal. Freshman goalie Reilly Gallagher made eight stops in the cage.
The Anteaters were led by Mary Brooks with two goals. Annika Nelson finished the day with 12 saves in goal.
UCI had the only goal in the first quarter, scoring with 5:45 on the clock to take a 1-0 lead. The Anteaters added two more goals in the second frame to go up 3-0 at halftime.
Kelsey Thorton scored on a powerplay for UCI to open up the second half before Mary Brooks added another goal as the Anteaters led, 5-0, after three quarters.
Wieseler put UCSD on the board, scoring on a six-on-five situation just 20 seconds into the fourth quarter. UCI answered with a powerplay goal from Allie Loomis. Fedler found the back of the net with 1:05 showing on the clock, cutting the Anteater lead to four. As time expired, Schneider drilled one past Nelson off a pass from Wieseler to give the Tritons one final goal.
UCSD will host its final two home games Friday, April 7 against Long Beach State at 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 8 against Pomona-Pitzer at noon.
